Post Factory_Tech & any L owner, I need your HELP!

Guys and gals, I need your input.

Today, I drove a beautiful white 2001 L. Boy did it turn heads.

Why I was given this privilege by its new owner is because he noticed something strange and he want me to test it out to see if I would notice anything.

The L has only 128 miles and what I discovered, I need your input.

Going to WOT in first through third, there was a very noticeable vibration at a certain point going through each gear. I felt it on the gas peddle and on the steering wheel. My wife was also with me but setting in the passenger side, she felt nothing.

So I dropped her off and took it up on the freeway to do some more testing.

Putting the L into first gear and keeping it in that gear, I slowly increased RPM’s until I felt the vibration. The vibration occurs at about 4200-4400 RPM’s, anything below or anything above, the L is smooth. If I kept the RPM’s steady with in the 4200-4400 range the vibration would continue until I either went over 4400 or backed off under 4200. The same thing happens in 2nd gear. My guess would be that it would also happen in third and fourth except that that road was too busy to run it up to the speeds needed to reach the those RPM’s.

My question to you is: what do you thing would cause such a vibration at those RPM’s and only thos RPM's????

Need your input to help out a new L owner.

JIM.....
Your post is kinda strange timing!
I have a 99 L. that has the vibration your discribing. I just talked to someone about it today. I've never driven another Gen.2 L.
So i thought it was normal. My truck also has the vibration when letting off the throttle. Just on lifting! When fully off throttle it isn't there!
I'm going to discuss it with my dealer Monday. I'll keep everybody posted!
If anyone else has a clue...Please HELP!!!

I don't think you are describing what I have described. What I have discussed deals with a strong vibration within a certain RPM range. It has nothing to do with letting off or increasing the throttle. the vibration is there only when the RPM's are within the 4200-4400 range

I had a vibration while crusing at 83+ MPH. I just eliminated it by installing the new aluminun drive shaft.

The 2001 that I drove already has the new shaft.

Anyone out there with a thought???

Try switching the O/D button off when you are in the vibration range. this will increase rpm's, but keep speed constant, and will narrow down the culprits to tranny/rear end, and will take wheels and related vibrations out of the guess work

Ford warranty work, sound like driveline to me. Take it back and tell them to keep it till it's fixed! In the meantime beat the snot out of the loaner I allways do, it seems to make me feel better.

Hey,Jim.My thought is that if you don't feel the vibration in the seat or through the floorboard,it could be related to an engine torsional vibration concern (crankshaft driven accessory mounted to the engine block)noticeable only at a specific RPM. I would rule the driveshaft out,as driveshaft speed varies.

Sounds like something in the engine or torque converter. Definitely somthing that turns at the same speed as the engine since it only does it at precise engine rpm's. If it were in the driveshaft or rear differential it would happen at specific road speeds not specific engine speeds.

I read the same thing on one of the Camaro forums a while back. Turned out it was one of the engine driven accessories. The dealer had to pull off and exchange each one until the problem was solved. I agree with the others get him to take it back and have it fixed.

If it truly is an engine accessory, you should be able to reproduce it with the vehicle in PARK.

Try 1st the fan/lights to get the alternator, then the A/C settings and even turning the steering wheel for the steering fluid pump, all of this while running the engine at the required rpm with the vehicle stationary.

Could also very well be one or more loose or even missing bolts on your rear drive shaft yolk where the rear U-joint connects to the rear pumpkin.Check that 1st also may be a bent driveshaft. This sounds like a driveline related problem to me.

Also forgot to mention that a true test for this would be to immediatly put the truck into neutral when you are deep into the vibrations. If it doen't continue then I would agree with the earlier post of it being related to a loose(or damaged ) torque converter or even the twice mentioned "loose crank pulley bolts".Check it right away!!

Couldit be a harmonic balancer? I remember someone saying they put on a larger lower blower pulley, and when they took off the stock pulley, they said the harmonic balancer almost fell off on its own! Either that or the bolts holding it in were finger tight or something that goes round and round.

I think I might have noticed a slight vibration the last time I drove my truck, I'll be sure to look for one next time I feed her.
