Post When should I perform the first oil change on my L?

As of now I have 410 miles on the L. And I'm trying to get some info on when to change the oil for the first time and to use and any other suggestions on time and products for following changes. Like what oil, filter, and how many miles in between. Thanks for any help.

EvilGuy,
For what it be worth, I intially changed oil in my 200L @ 1000 miles. I also disassembled the oil filter to observe any metal that may have been trapped. I was very pleased to find no visible metal particles. I now renew the oil and filter @ 2500 mile intervals with Mobil 1 5w30 and the Fram oil filter.

I agree. When new do it between 800-1000 miles. I would stay away from Fram filters though. I have heard bad things about them on this board. I use a Motorcraft with the Silicone Anti-Drainback valve.

The manual that came with my L said 5000 miles but my dealership said 3000 miles. I would stay with the Motorcraft 5w-30 till 5000 miles and then switch to a full synthetic. I don't see any benefit to changing perfecty good oil at 1000 miles I know some companies use a break in oil from the factory but that is up to you. I would however get the anti-drainback filter, it keeps the oil up in the motor instead of in the oilpan. Many people and companies say that most motor wear happens at startup when the motor is waiting for the oil to circulate to vital engine parts. I use the K&N filter with the anti-drain back device in it but I hear that Purolator makes one too. I use Amsoil because of the added protection, they have oil comparison charts on their web site showing that their oil reduces wear better than Mobil 1 synthetic and Castrol Syntec to name a few (www.oil4kids.com)

The reason you change your oil at 1000 miles is to get any metal particles that could be in the oil from production and/or breakin. NO filter will catch 100% of contaminants. Ask any engine builder and they will tell you this is cheap insurance. As for synthetic, they've told me its a waste of money.

I have been called paranoid and ana1retentive over this, but since I am a mech designer and regularly see the wear effects on rotating and sliding machinery...

Run it in as if it was an old bigblock. Lots of variation in rpm, no high loads (more than 1/2 throttle) until 1000 km has passed.

So, 1 change @ 25 km, 2nd change @ 1000, 3rd @5000 km. Then every 5000 km.

I normally change oil on my project engines after about 100 miles. I cut the filter and examine for metal. There is usually some left over from machining, even after cleaning and cleaning. I do the same at 1000 mi.

In the Lightning, I changed after 1000 miles. I followed the mfg. specs at 5000 and 10,000. I waited until 10,000 before I went to synthetic. I use Red Line 5w30 and a K& N oil filter.

It works for me.

I ran my '95 Cobra 130,000 mi. and didn't have to add a drop of oil between changes!
