Question Six disk changer ???

I thought the 2001,s were suppose to come with the "in dash six disk changer".Mine
came with a six disk magazine behind the seat. The only thing i'm not happy with on
my new L is the radio. I guess i'll change
it out. The bummer is someone told me you
can't use the Ford changer with a non Ford
head unit. Is that true ?

It should work with most faces that you attach. If I'm not mistaken, it's a Pioneer, a pretty generic brand.
But yes, the stereo is the ONLY bad feature of the truck. I am also planning on revamping the system: head unit with in-dash changer, new speakers, and a small sub.

I did a significant amount of checking and found NO way to use stock changer with aftermarket head.

I have not read of anyone else who has either

The 99s were Pioneers (I think), but teh 2Ks were Clarions. I don't think that Clarion will let you use anything other than Clarion unless you have an adaptor.

They are Clarion, both the head unit and the changer. Both units are actually pretty good pieces, IMHO.

The real deficiancy is in the speakers. I changed my factory speakers for a set of Kenwood Excelons and added a 6.5" internally amp'ed Bazooka Tube behind the passenger seat and I find that it works just great. Not too boomy and clear & clean thru the Kenwoods.

Any speaker you pick should sound better than the factory ones. Listen to a bunch and find one that your ear likes and install them. If at that point you feel the head unit/changer is still lacking, the go with new ones.

This may save you a little green that can go for go-fast goodies!

I was able to exchange the cassette head unit for the single CD head unit at a reduced cost. Talk to your dealer. You are only allowed to do that within a certain mileage. Otherwise, the CD head unit price is really rude.

I have a 2000 model in dash single CD...I have never really paid any attention to see if it has CD chgr controls though. It's the Lariat premium sound one though.
I would guess they are between $400 an $800 new from Ford. Stock units are never cheap.

I only(!) paid $400.00 CDN for mine on exchange, so figure around $250.00 US on exchange. And yes, the premium stereo unit controls the changer.

You might also try the classified section. Lots get sold there.

Ask your dealer.

Thumbs up

Here's another idea that works pretty good is you want to retain the factory head but run aftermarket speakers. Go buy a couple of amps (and your subs/speakers if you don’t have them already), one for running your mids/highs and one for the subs. Wire them up as if you had a aftermarket head.
Then go buy a couple of line output converters that change standard speaker output to standard pre-amp RCA that your amps use. You can see what I'm talking about by going here ...
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...101PL2&o=M&a=0

This will allow your stock head to run all your amps. Later, if you decide to upgrade the head unit all you do is remove the converters. I had to do this in my F250 after my head unit was stolen (they left everything else since I had it installed so well) and I really can’t tell the difference between my factory and the JVC head I used to have. I plan on doing this to my 01 when it comes in.
The price at crutchfield is about 30 bucks and it's the same at places like circuit city, sound advice, etc. I went to my local stereo shop and found them for 15 bucks, so for 30 bucks I was rocking again.
If you ran a nice EQ between the converters and the amps you would be able to control the output of your subs and mids/high’s which improves sound quality by about 50% or more. Good luck.

The parts manager at my local dealer had a
brand new in the box single cd/cassette with changer control. It would not fit,i thought
that all the units were standard, but with
Ford who knows. Looks like i have to go
after market.I wanted to keep it stock, oh well.I'm hoping he can find a single cd NO
cassette player. $$$$$$
