Cam Gears

What cam gears does everyone use in a cam swap? I'm going for the Comp 278 cams, is there another gear option other than the adjustables from Comp or LFP?

depends, there are about 3 degrees without grinding the keyway, I ground mine enough to get 9* of movement, worked perfect.

So there is "slop" in the keyway now?

They use the same bolt as the harmonic balancer, so the bolts will hold well enough. You can shim the keyway if you want.

I just bought a set of the Comp's and they look like they will do the job....they are a redesign of the gears that had a nice reputation of breaking and tearing up motors.

Like any other aftermarket part you have to look them over carefully before install. The drivers side (Left) gear had some interference between the aluminum center piece and the steel gear. They didn't get a chamfer machined big enough in the hub area and the two parts would rock back and forth between your fingers. A file and a stone was used to knock back a few edges and now they fit perfect....the right side gear was fine.

I also was not happy with the packaging...they are thrown into a nice looking box with just a piece of bubble wrap and the parts bounce around on one another and it does do some damage. One gear had a couple of dings in a bad spot the other gear was fine....this is completely unacceptable to me.

Make sure you de-grease the steel gear before lock tighting and use and inch pound torque wrench to tighten things up.

The complaints are minor but for the price....a little more attention to detail and a proper box insert couldn't be that difficult.

Stock with a shaved key.

I'm going to give these Comps a try....I don't really see any reason they shouldn't work. But if there is just a hint of a problem...its back to stock.

yeah, you can grind the key way completely out, the bolt is going to hold it solid. The 4 valve cobra's dont even have keys.
