Post Off Topic (Ford Taurus question)

I know this does not belong on this board but I know someone here has done this before and can help me out :-)

I have a 93 Taurus for my winter car. It died the other day and after playing around I found out the problem. The pulley on the AC unit froze up and will not spin. This was causing the car not to start. No problem, I just went out and bought a shorter belt and by passed the AC. Well the belt rubs the AC pulley and is putting ribs in the belt. No big deal right? I will just drive the car home, and fix it when I get there. Well for some reason I only get like 5-6 miles out of the car before it dies. I then put a new battery in it (had one laying around) and got like 5-6 miles out of that one. Not sure if this is due to the fact that the belt is rubbing the AC pulley or if the alternator I put in 3 days ago is actually bad. My questions. If an alternator is not working properly is it possible for a car to only last 5-10 minutes about 5-6 miles before the battery is dead? Second how hard is it to remove the AC unit from the car?

Thanks for any help

John

Are these new parts? If the diode things in the alternator are shorted to ground. You have a direct short to ground from the battery. and since it never did charge up much, it goes flat easy.
