whightlightnin'

I just read your post. Now that you have miles on the alum. shaft, is it worth the $$?

At aprox. 83-85 MPH I notice that the L runs a little rough. Have you noticed a smoothing out of the powertrain?

Fordsales, I just installed mine after talking to Jim at JDM. The aluminum driveshafts will absorb a lot more of the frequencies generated by the lower gears. That's why Ford put it in the 01 along with the 3.7 gears. They also put in a larger harmonic balancer to help with the frequency. Don't know if we really need the balancer but probably not a bad idea. I installed the drive shaft just for safety because I figured sooner or later something would pay the price if I didn't do something to compensate for the extra frequency. Jim can explain it better than I. Jeff

It is not the aluminum that absorbs the vibration, it is the shaft that has a bigger diameter, and is therefore stiffer. This means less oscillation and less chance of destructive harmonic vibration. It became neccessary because of the higher speed of the shaft after fitting the 3.73 gears.

BlackLight

So is it safe to assume the 5" shaft JDM is offering is a better unit than the 4.5 that's in the 2001 L's ?

Just wondering

Andy

The Ford and JDM driveshafts are identical. They're made by the same company and I've had the JDM piece on my truck for a couple months now and the truck is super smooth on the highway and I also have the 3.73's.
It drives better than stock

Question.....
can ford employees get a discount on parts?
It seems from this post it is possible...but my dealer told me that it was not.

Your dealer doesn't want to give you a discount. I ordered mine for $163, 10% over cost
