Who makes the best oil filter?
I went to the auto parts store today to buy an oil filter for the L. I got there and grabed the PH2 Fram filter and noticed a whole bunch of other filter brands. Mobil 1 and Bosch caught my eye. They both claimed single pass efficiency of 98% vs 96% for the Fram. I keep my vehicles for a long time and like to maintain them to minimize repairs. I have gotten 250,000 miles on each of my last two cars before they got run over. My question is what filter does the best job of filtering out particles and combustion contaminents? Also, is there some sort of filter test out there that addresses my question? I have noticed the L oil gets very black, almost like diesel engine oil so I am a little concerned about the logevity of this motor. Same thing on the wifes 5.4 Expedition. Thanks for the input.
Karl
Glad to see you.
I change every 3,000 miles and have the filter mag on and the oil still looks black, doesn't smell burnt but still looks black.
I would also like to hear opinions

All right, as a public service, and to improve my karma, I give you the link to some good information:
http://members.nbci.com/minimopar/oilfilterstudy.html
I really think that this link should be incorported into the FAQ. Bottom line is that our stock filters are excellent, and since they can be had dirt cheap at Walmart there is no reason we should not change them with reasonable frequency.

Thanks Alphadoggy this is "good stuff". Hey Jim, put this link in the FAQ even though nobody ever reads it. Man I dread all the 01 questions we're about to get. "What kind of oil, filter, chip, carwash, wax, tires, etc, etc. do I use on my L."

Red,
I use pretty much the FL820S or Purolater filers in combination with a Filtermag to trap ferrous metal particles.

alphadoggy,
That article was pretty interesting. I've tried the 820S (of course), the Fram Toughguard, Mobil 1 and the Deutsh sp?
It seems to me that my oil stays cleanest between changes on the 820S. Now I have an idea as to why. Thanks for posting that. What, about a $7 savings over the Mobil 1 filter? That makes it almost irresponsible not to run synthetic oil in my book! I know - conventional oils are good too. But there are advantages to synthetic in extreme situations. Kinda like insurance. I like the fact it doesn't "cook" as readily and keeps the shiny parts shiny.
FORDSALES,
Mine has never gotten past the point of being dark caramel colored. Once I had gone past my 3,000 mile interval with Havoline Synthetic and the 820S filter and it still wasn't bad at all. I'm a longtime user of Mobil 1 Synthetic, but after using the Havoline at $18 a case vs ~$24 for Mobil 1, I'm not sure the Mobil 1's worth it. And in my opinion the Havoline seems to hold up better. I wonder if Robert Yates uses it in his personal cars too?

Everyone thanks for all the info! It looks like the Fram filter is out. I read the filter study link posted by alphadoggy, lots of good information. Although I have gotten an education in filter design and manufacture I am still unsure as to which filter does the best job. Any automotive engineers specializing in internal engine lubrication out there willing to chip in??? Thanks again to everyone! Spedin Bob - Go Lakers !
I use the 820S exclusively in my L and my Contour and here is why. Not only is it an excellent oil filter, it also has one of the best anti-drainback valves out there. This is critical on the Duratech (Contour V-6) to keep the camshaft tensioner from bleeding down overnight which causes chain "rattle" at start up. I am pretty sure it serves the same function in the 5.4L. YMMV
I have heard that it is recommended the we use an oil filter with a back-flow device in it. I use the K&N but Purolater makes one too.It keeps the oil up in the motor so at start up the oil is there allready. It is also a good idea to get a oil pump that will circulate the oil for a while after the truck is turned of so the oil that is trapped by the back-flow fiters doesn't cook up there. I don't have the circulator pump but it seems to make sense.
