RTKILLA,

Not unless the Sy has been abused since it rolled off the asmebly line in 1991. It should run mid to low 13xx's. To actually find a stock Sy though is like trying to find a stock 5.0 Mustang Most of the Sy's you'll come across will not be stock, and should be in the 12's somewhere w/ minor mods. Hope this helps.

I sure hope this thread doesnt turn into another "Bolt vs Sy" trash fest like the few times before. It was just a simple question he asked fellas

Eh, I got a little info.
Back in '92, my brand new bone stock Sy ran 13.70/96mph. I launched at 2000rpm/NO boost and it was about 70 degrees and real humid. Well,we all know how much quicker our Gen2 L's run in the colder temps. That goes for the Sy too. Not to mention shortly after that I learned how to really 'launch' a Sy. Set the parking brake, left foot on regular brake, stall it out to 5-7#'s of boost and let it go.BAM! I cut 3 tenths of my 60' alone(2.0 to 1.7)! I just wish I'd have tried this when the truck was stock because it would have gone alot quicker than 13.7/96 ! Keep in mind these are drag strip times,if you're gonna race a Sy on the street with a Gen2 L, you had better do it from a roll. From a stand still with those F1's,all you're gonna see is a little black tailgate !!!

I am surprised that you are surprised at the performance of the Syclone. When it came out, Car & Driver timed it 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. I came close to buying one for just that performance, but I did not like the looks of the truck. It is a tough little bitch to take off the line!

Whats the top speed on a SY.

There's just this guy on another site thats a real bitch. I know the Sy's are damn fast, but I just wanted to know how fast. I think I better forget those 20's and get some more HP and TRQ from JDM.

I have no Idea what this guy runs, its a site where nobody says anthing about there times. street racing, you know.

Just a question, but I heard the performance on those trucks dropped off after 40k miles or so - something about the engines needing rebuilds or having problems, or something. Any truth to this?

Turbos usally don't last over 40k when you beat on them, which I'm sure every syclone has. My mother had a lebaron turbo before, fast car, but after 50k the turbo's went out and damn, what a dog. It happens when you first start the car or something like that. My body man was just talking about it with me. I guess the oil doesn't get to the turbos fast enough on start ups and hurts them. thats just what he said. I'm sure they got better systems now, but back then it was an after market thing.

I'm sure Hamrhead can help us here, but I believe those motors had problems after time due to the fact that people typically turned the boost up (and leaned them out with chips) ... and the bone stock internals of that motor are weak. Cast pistons in a turbo motor from the factory. Oh my...can you say, "cutting corners"?

The GM turbo motor to have is the 3.8 Buick, but I know a number of guys who rebuild the Sy/Ty 4.3 with strong internals and run really good times w/ other upgrades.

Another issue with them over time is the 4WD. Big advantage when its working, but it can be a pain to maintain.

Down here in the Texas heat, a stock Sy is happy to run 13.7-13.8 and the trap speeds are in the 95-96 range.

I really like those trucks, so I'm not bashing them at all.

The Sy that I raced ran a 14.6X? & had about 70 or 80K miles. Then we raced A timers off "street race" I gave him 6 cars head start, & still beat him by a good 2 cars. They don't all run fast. Lloyd

I ran into a couple Sy/Ty's at all truck day at Bandimere last Summer. One guy ran a 12.33!! I about $hi+! I was running flat 15.00-bone stock 99L. (at this altitude that's about right-compared with the other L's I've run into up here-about 6000'). I went to talk to him, he had boost and a chip, I think that's all. They are scary fast if hitting on all 6!

I know cars can do better than the mags say, but heres what one popular mag got...

GMC Syclone as quoted from Motor Trend:

0-60mph : 4.9 sec
1/4mile : 13.6 @ 98.6mph
Braking from 60mph : 133 feet
Lateral g's : .82

top speed : 120mph (I believe it has a limiter, I could be wrong)

Horsepower : 280
Torque: 360
All Wheel Drive

Max carrying load: 500lbs.
Not sure about towing capacity.
I guess people don't buy a mini truck for construction work and shovling horse manuer. These are basically straight line rockets. I remember when they first came out, a salesman from another dealership said they were the fastest things on the road (1991).

Cost in 1991 : $25,500

126 TOP Speed, but that is just because the chip shuts it down. Change the chip and it'll keep goin'. Tho I've never had mine past 120 or so.

As far as how long Turbo's last. I think it all depends on how you take care of them and what kind of driving you do. If you do a lot of short hops and cold starts,of course it will take its toll(like any engine). Alot of highway driving, clean oil, allowing the turbo to 'spin down' before you turn it off = longer life. These trucks came from the factory with a water-cooled bearing housing on the turbo,so that definitely helps out. Also came from the factory with Mobil 1. I can't really attest to turbo life because my Sy has all of 9k on it and I've upgraded turbos 2 times. No problems at all though.

I am one of those people who turned up the boost and leaned it out. Yeah,I smoked my motor because I was 'hell bent' for 11's.As you can see by my sig,I didn't quite make it.Ah well, that's racing. Anyway, there are people out there who take serious steps to make sure their Sy's are tuned to the max before the race them. These guys turn up the boost and run real hard. Their motors (even stock motors) last because they keep the air/fuel ratios correct. As with many others,my truck was knocking bad(I have a knock detector - I knew it), but I got greedy. The motor let go,my fault. I think the 3.8 motor has better electronics(distributorless ignition)for a turbo application, but the 4.3 is a tougher engine(from the factory).Tons of people have smoked Grand National motors for the same reasons. You just gotta feed them the fuel! Now I'm awaiting my new engine that is built like a 'brick ****house'. You can be sure I'll be alot more careful about turning up the boost on this engine, even though it'll take much more of a beatin' than the stocker.

Just wait and see,as these Gen2's get faster and faster,we're gonna start to see engine failures too. Run 'em hard 'til they break, then put it back together stronger. That's racing !
