Thumbs up New Competition?

Amidst my 6-month waiting period (soon to be ending in ~3 weeks when the L arrives ) I decided to check out the competition. Sure, there’s not much out there. But then I happened to check out TRD’s (Toyota Racing Development) website. They pointed out the Ivan Stewart package for the V8 Tundra but nothing really performance wise. So I dropped them an e-mail. My response from them was pretty optimistic. It appears there is a supercharger being developed and it should be available this summer. They currently have a few SC packages for the Toyota V6 engines but this is a first for the V8 model (I’ve seen). I noticed a few people posted about seeing one in an Auto Show recently. Well it looks like it may happen sooner than anyone expected. So much for waiting on Chevy. But I wonder how well the drive train will hold up? I’m sure the engine won’t have a problem. Plus Toyota dealerships sell TRD upgrade packages now. Similar to Ford with Rousch, and Saleen (sp?).

On another note, Craig Paisley (well known in the Supra world) is supposed to be building a TRD sponsored Drag Tundra. Supposed to be on the bottle with other goodies targeting the 900hp range. Keep your eyes peeled at the import races (for those that attend).

For a little info the V8 SR5 4WD Tundra has 245hp & 315ft-lbs, weighs ~4500lbs, and is the $26000 - $27000 range (excluding options).

Mike,

This Tundra will have around 345 with super charger and a weight around 4300 lbs. Real close to the lightning, but it still won't be competition. It's not just the specs on the L that make it work, it's the whole package.

I don't ever see this coming stock on a Tundra, and only as an aftermarket kit. With that, Gears would be needed and there's still no intercooler (not even a leaky one).

I am not worried here at all. when the battle comes down, if it does, I feel that displacement will win out, 4.7L vrs 5.4L.

Moreover, Toyota TRD only has the bandwidth to put out parts, not whole units within the price range of a typical buyer

Sorry man, that's just how I see it.

Berto

Toyota has never made anything worth even looking at, and their not going to start now. The Tundra will never be in a league with the Lightning, so Tundra owners need to stop dreaming.

tliss,

I want Tundra owners to keep dreaming. AS long as the Lightning's around, those dreams will be nightmares...

I was just down at my Ford/Toyota dealer last week. I was there to ask some questions about the Grand Marquis LSE (whose interior is almost identical to the upcoming Marauder). The sales guy said Toyota is coming out with lowered, TRD supercharged version of the Tacoma that will only be available in Red or Black. Be interesting to see, but you guys are right about Toyota's styling, there are very few attractive Toyotas made. Lots of conservative, reliable yuppie mobiles though and they sell the heck out of em. My sister purchased five of the things.

I think that it's a solid fact:

Salesman are the last to know, but have to make conversation. I've never seen one of these things even proposed and I get 4 auto mags a month...

Now I am begining to wonder if Consumer reports, Woman's Word, and Car Stereo Review are not True car magazines...

Good Grief Carmudgen!!!! How tall are you. I'm 6'5" and only had trouble when i rode in the back of an eclipse and a mustang, but never had trouble in the front seats. I've never sat in a Toyota before, but surely it couldn't be smaller that those. I used to have an Isuzu P/U (I don't miss any of it) and there was all kinds of room.

Also, does anybody ever use this chat on this site? I've never seen anybody on.

I don't care if they make a 900 horsepower Toyota for $20k. I can't get in one and have any room to drive it. the seats are too low, the dash is too close and the roof is too low. A 4-door Ranger is ok , but the toyotas have always been made for little people. I had a 98 Chev and I had to lay down in the seat to have room for my head. I may trade this 99 for an 01, which would set me up for an 03. Whatever it takes, this is my idea of a truck. It makes up for every GTO, SS, GNX, Vette, I never had.
rant off.
