Post New problem, or just clunk??

I just noticed the other day that my truck makes a loud popping noise as I am turning right, and up the grade (relatively steep) of my driveway. The noise sounds as if it is coming from behind the passenger seat and is very apparent. I had the original front end clunk fixed - if one could even say that - but this sounds different than that. Any thoughts on this? I thought that it might be some type of body flex which may cause the ground effects on the cab and bed to come in contact with each other... I remember reading that here a while back. There are no signs of that so I am left wondering what is making the noise.

Question

Which fix did you use for the original front-end-clunk ?

1) Huge force
2) Star washer & huge force
3) Welding
4) action 911 's slotted washer

The dealer used number one - huge force. It has held up so far... unless it's back again. I went out tonight after dinner and was playing around with it and it seems to only make the noise when turning right, and up a grade(i.e. my driveway, Burger King...). It sounds as if it is coming from the right side of the truck between the bed and the cab. It's just a popping noise when I turn up an incline - no matter how I attack the turn.

Mine does the same thing, almost sounds like the tire blew or something. Only does it on slow right turns into a driveway.

In my opinion, only #4 is a fix. #3 will make the sound go away, but might let you down in a big way some time later.

So, to answer the question : clunk is baack...

it might be just the body and the bed flexing ford did have a problem at one time with the beds not being tight enough or becoming loose.

I notice that noise on my 99. However, it is inconsistent. I will not get it turning right up my driveway apron, but will get it up the street going up a parking lot apron. Maybe it is just the angle of the turn or the pitch of the apron. Never hear it any other place. Seems like to me it was coming from the front and it is probably the wheel stop studs needing some heavy grease slapped on.

By the way I got the clunk fix from Ford which which was change out the lower control arms. But somebody on this Board said that the part numbers on the replacement control arms are the same as the original. I have no idea how they knew that. They did not replace them.

It's easy to tell if it is the offical "Clunk", just put some paint on the control arm around the bolt (I used white-out). Drive it, then check to see if the paint has been rubbed off by the bolt moving. I check mine every time I check the intercooler level.

the popping noise you hear when going up an incline over a slight bump, is the sliding bolt clunk. the steering stop noise can be heard, sitting still, by turning lock to lock in either direction. this is the SVT approved method for checking your steering stop grease level.
