Possibly trading for '01 L... informed opinions needed
My truck (Black 00 L) has 2500 miles, is immaculate, and is paid for.
I am going tomorrow to talk with a friend/salesman about trading for a Silver '01 L. I am wondering if any of you '01 owners paid less than MSRP (in other words, will they LET my friend sell it for under sticker?), and how much I should be looking at paying for the trade. I'm not going to tell you what figures I have in my head until I see what you guys have to say.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
If I do trade, I will have an R9 Superchip for sale. I believe my AIRAID will carry over to the new truck.
Thanks in advance

Kristi2000L,
I may be overstepping my bounds, but, why would you be getting rid of your 2000? You have paid the tax, title, license and it will take a considerable depreciation hit. Bottom line to trade it, the dealer will not give you a penny over 20% back of wholesale book (just because the salesman is a friend will not make the dealer give you more for your trade and drop the price of the new one). There is a 99 (w/3000 miles) from one of our board members and he was hoping to get $24k on ebay. And then I just met another Lightning owner who bought a perfect 99 with 9k miles for $25K. Think of it this way, a dealer makes probably 20% on a Lightning at full MSRP, so they pay approx $26k for a new one. I would suspect a dealer would offer you $20k in trade for a new one. I just can't see why you would make the move to get an 01. The slight changes made to the 01 could easily be done to yours for way less than just the tax, title and license that you will pay for the new 01.
If you do make the change, keep us all posted on the results. Good luck.

Thank you for a well-informed reply. Definitely food for thought. I suppose I can go see what they'll do and I can always leave without hurting feelings if it's nowhere near reasonable.
Bottom line, I want a Silver one, I don't want to buy a used one, and there are no new 2000s to be found in this area. I never should have settled for my second color choice. It is SO beautiful, but it is going to really show all the highway wear when I start towing my race car all over the country with it. That begins very soon so I was thinking perhaps I should do a trade now, before all those miles and the wear gets on there. Once this season gets underway, I can kiss low mileage and perfect paint goodbye and we all know that black shows that sort of thing 100x worse than any other color. I have had excellent results with Silver vehicles (My C5 was, and my Galant is) so it's just a thought that I've been kicking around. But if I'm going to get reamed, I'll sell it to an individual, take a slight kick in the rear, and see what I want to do then.
Again, nothing is decided. I'm just picking your brains and mine.
I'm also seriously considering selling the Galant and the Lightning and getting an 01 Yukon for both my tow vehicle and my daily driver because hopefully my race car will fill that need for speed void until next winter. Maybe THEN I will buy another L, when the '01s are more plentiful. My days of having time to play with a street machine are drawing to a close anyway, what with racing season taking up every weekend from now till December, combined with school, work, and maintaining the race car.
Don't yell at me yet, I'm just sorting thoughts.. LOL

Sell it outright, the dealer will only give so much for it regargless if you have a friend there or not. I checked on the rear tailights and they are $40.12 that would be the only thing I would want from the 2001

You will probably be happier in the long run with a Silver one, even if it is gonna cost you more money. Both Silver and White are low maintenance colors, and they both will look good for years ..... even if all you do is run them though the car wash and never polish and wax them.
Black and Red are great looking colors, Black is actually my favorite color. I had to decide between Black and White when I bought mine. Black looked Soo cool and I wanted it bad, but common sense took over and I got the white one. It's been a year and a half, and I have yet to polish or wax it. It still looks great.
So get the Silver one and spend your weekends driving it instead of polishing it.

Your dealer pays $28,223 for a new one. If he sells it for sticker, he makes $3522 on it, less expenses. You will always get hosed on a trade, but you might as well check the figures for yourself.

Hi there, an '00 with less than 4k, i just saw 2, both were traded and pulled about 26,500, and that was stretching for the dealer. They are asking 29 each. I doubt the '01 could be had for less than 30-31k. So for 5k you a model year newer, the color you want which is THE only color to get, IMHO
You get the Improved intake and intercooler, 3.73 rear which i wouldn't want, some suspension tweaks and all the cool new lenses and lights. All in all not too bad a deal. SO tell'em 3k and your truck and go to 5k. Ideally you should only give 3k and have 2k for taxes, still 5-7 out of pocket. I'd do the 3k and taxes = 5k, i dont know how much more i'd want to give. Have the dealer broker it and then buy the '01. Selling yourself is a huge pain IMHO, broker for a medium between trade and retail, a thought.

It is true black is a pain in the *** color. I don't know if I would get black again.
Do you guys think red is hard to keep in good condition? I've never had a red car. I don't know about silver or white, I don't think these colors could ever have the shine of a black or red one (especially black).
I thought about trading my 99 for a 01, but in my opinion its just not worth it. Not enough of an improvement that I couldn't do to my 99 and save a lot of money in the process. BTW, I hear the 01's still have the clunk!!
If anything I am gonna wait for a 03 it's suppossed to take the Lightning to another level...

I'm not looking to buy a $45,000 SUV
I think my truck and $5K would be a reasonable trade. I know I will keep the new silver truck a long time because I absolutely LOVE my 2000 (except for the color maintenance). I've had 2 Z28's (one a convertible), a LS1 TA, and a C5 and as far as fun-to-drive factor, the L takes the cake hands-down. I was thinking about it last night and I realized I would NOT be happy for very long if my only vehicle was a Yukon.
I'm going to the dealership this afternoon. I'll let you know how it goes
Thanks again!
