Hollow Victory
Tonight, I'm heading home from the hospital with my wife, after visiting on my two 3-day old sons that in intensive care for being premature (they are doing really well by the way). We are tooling up the street in front of the mall where there are 5 lights in a row pretty close together, when some little car comes whizzing around me, swerving in and out of lanes but gets caught by the red up ahead.
I change lanes so I end up 1 car ahead of him in another lane. Turns out it is a dodge neon with custom paint job, big wheels, super low profile tires, the whole package, even had the locking posts on the hood (to protect all those valuable engine mods).
So, light goes green, traffic moves out, I get an opening and I move out to get in front of the line at the next light. He manages to work his way around and comes up next to me. I'm laughing with my wife about how ridiculous his car is when the guy comes next to me and I see that he is your typical punk with a rice mobile, hat on backwards, the whole cliche. He has a loud stereo with big speakers and actually sits there next to me revving his engine up and looks over. I can't resist, so I look around to make sure I'm not going to become the victim of our local constabulary, and the coast being clear, I left foot the brake and rev it in return.
This guy is serious, ready to go and is really revving it. He may have had a turbo, because there was a weird whine. I'm having fun so I rev it up higher than usual and the truck moves a bit, so I ease up, but I'm still revved higher than normal waiting for a light.
Light goes green while I'm talking to my wife....neon jumps on it and takes off....I'm suprised, lift the brake and jam on the gas. I lurch forward, and then break traction. I spin through 1st as he gets a little lead, and spin a bit on second before I realize I need to let up on the go pedal a bit.
I get my head out of my behind and gain some traction, about 1 car length (neon length, not L) the neon. I am now hooked up good and have pedal back down. I reel the neon in quick, match his speed for a second, and then proceed to walk away as the last light turned green for me.
I'm just about to slow down and play again, so I look in my rear view just in time to see him swerve from the middle lane to make a right hand turn at the last light. I think he almost flipped his car he hung it so tight. So, I slow down to the speed limit and have a nice laugh with my wife.
It is a shame that the only thing I can get to bite around here isn't hardly worth reeling in. The good thing is that even with the worst launch of my truck's history, I still stack one in the W category.
