dont they (its always "they" isn't it?) have a kit for testing your oil? you collect a sample of it & send it to them...

i also drive like an idiot sometimes.(on a closed course with proper safety equipment, i'm a professional. yeah, right)
WOT 1-2 times a day, many, many more times on weekends.

speeding bob - i dont change my oil because i dont like having to crawl my fat @$$ under the truck to do it.. plus when i go to get it done i like to watch the attendants fight to see who gets to drive my truck in.
it warms my heart..

oh... i guess he didnt see my brake fluid when he was putting the oil in.. i'm sure he would have said something about it.. our brake fluid is supposed to be clear, isn't it? i think when i bought the truck it was.
damn stuff keeps leaking out too. aargh.
what am i to do? its brackish colored..
do i need to change it? rather, do i need to get it changed? LOL

i do like working on things, but after a long day at work (8-12 hours on machines) i want someone else to have the headache.

clonetek,

One more thought. Feel Mobil 1 5w-30 between your fingers right out of the bottle. Remember how it feels and smell it. After 500 or so miles in the engine, smell and feel it again. If it smells of gasoline or feels watery thin, something isn't right. Have it analyzed at that point. Yes, you can buy those kits to do so.

I can't imagine that your driving conditions are causing a problem unless something is wrong with your truck. Again, smell it and feel it and use your best judgement. That sounded XXX didn't it?

Brooks,
I know all about the brake fluid changing colors. Personally, I would flush it out and refil with Castrol LMA (Low Moisture Absorption or something like that) and see if it stays the nice clear/yellowish color. That dark color after a few thousand miles bugs me.

As far as the oil analysis is concerned, go to AutoZone or somewhere and they sell the kits. Mobil 1 makes it. I did this with my new engine in my 92 stang a short time ago. They get the results back to you in about a week. The cost is around $18.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Trace

My engine failed at 8685 miles and I am in the process of gathering info/evidence to use against Ford because they are trying to void my warranty (because of the chip). My uncle works for Citgo and I had him send my oil analysis results to one of their chemical engineers for his opinion. This guy is unbiased and wasn't given any details about the case other than the type of eng/truck (and he was familiar with what an "L" is) He says this oil (mobil 1 5w30) is WAY too thin for this application. He said that he would expect engine bearing failure to eventually happen if this oil is used in the L. He recommended at least 10w30 and 15w50 in hot climates.

Got to agree with bobcmt, those guys scare me. Took the "L" there the 1st time @1500mi and said dump the oil and don't touch anything else! Charged me $50 for Mobil 1, that was the last time. Did the "L" and Escape last weekend for $65. I run 10w30 in both even though the Escape calls for 5w20. Can't see it hurting anything.

geforce - i didnt know you felt that way about me.. LOL
if the oil smells like gas, what is the problem?
i think my engine is fine. i get a little puff of smoke (sometimes) when going to WOT, but i've heard that is common/normal.

trace - i'm glad to hear from you again..
my brake fluid (well, the fluid that hasnt leaked out yet - thanks ford!) is very dark colored.. i want to swap it out with something better. i wonder if mobil1 has anything? i'd have to learn how to change my brake fluid & bleed the lines.
oh, btw.. how are you doing at learning bodywork?
gonna stop by autozone & look for that oil check kit.

-random info-
i just turned over 15K a couple of days ago.
got my NGK TR6's today.. i need a better gap tool than the POS round thing from autozone.

clonetek,

I changed my oil 300 miles ago. Because of your post, I went out and smelled and felt it. It smelled pretty much like used oil and felt like it did out of the bottle. No gasoline smell either.

Because you asked, the worst thing I've seen happen because of gasoline in the oil is wiped out rings and shiny'ed-up bores, which causes a loss of compression. Not good. The engines I saw do this were carbureted and leaked after shutdown into the intake, which then ran down the cylinder walls into the oil.

Well, we're not carbureted as you know. In a rare circumstance, I suppose a single fuel injector still under pressure at shutdown could do the same thing. I'm guessing here as everybody can tell since you say it runs good. (And yes, the WOT black puff is normal) Ok, I know you get it up to operating temperature when you drive it - how many miles do you go before shutdown?

Red face

from a lurker:
I am amazed at the low viscosity rec'd for this supercharged powerhouse! 5/30? With nearly 400hp and "extreme duty" who wouldn't go with 10/40 min. or 20/50 ideally?

Saw a red L w/22k at local used lot. Fluids good, started fine/no slap, IC tank low, no door cracks though, etc. asking wayyyy to high @ $30k for this plain jane. Same truck advertised last week for $35k, LOL.

Cool

Hey Clonetec,
I didn't really mean to wish bad things on you after our last meeting of the minds. I I will add this to confuse things because of our lasting love.

I run an oil pressure gauge because I found out the gauge on the trucks is an off and on gauge, not a real gauge. Anyway, when I start the truck I show 90-95 psi! Don't know how the heads don't leak with that kind of start up. It drops to 50 psi at the lights but jumps back up to 75 during daily driving. I have never run the 10 wt. so I don't know if it will increase those numbers. I will get my oil change tomorrow with the 10 wt. and let you know.
Good Luck,
Alvin
