Post Gas

If this has already been covered in the Lightning FAQ, I'm sorry - I was unable to find it.
My question is whether or not it really matters which type of gas I put in my L? The dash says "Premium Only", but does it matter if every now and then I put in regular-unleaded to save a buck or two?

Thanks

Cool

No flame intended, but if you wanted to save a buck or two, you shoulda bought a Honda. These trucks should only have premium in them. If I'm not mistaken, don't they ping when you put something else in?? (anyone?) I know there was a story a little while ago, how a guy let his wife borrow it, and when she game back, she had filled it up with regular. Can't remember what it did to his truck.

If you really want to save a buck or two find a used Yugo. These things are so much fun you won't want to baby it like you would have to with regular. Besides it is still expensive @ 12-13mpg. My advice is to give up something else.(I don't know of any Yugo's for sale )

FWIW, my wife had put the regular stuff in the L once, once. It pinged and ran like *****, even set off the MIL. Dont do it.

There were some posts months ago that the computer on the L was not set to a certain octane rating. It said we should have the mechanic check, and if it was not set, have him set it to 91. The posts said this would increase performance. I had my mechanic do just this, and it made no difference. In fact he verified what some other members said. The computer is not set to a specific high octane in case you happen to get bad gas or put in a lower octane by mistake. When the computer senses this it will retard the timing so you don't do a lot of damage to your engine. Sense mine is now set to 91, I have to be sure I don't get bad gas (until I take it to the mechanic to have it changed back). So to answer your question, the computer is set to minimize damage from a lower octane gas, but why take the chance for a couple of bucks.
