Have you done anything different since the last time the pipes stayed clean? If not, check your chip's connection and try again. Make sure the air filter isn't dirty. (It better not be! lol) Make sure the MAF sensor wire is plugged in good.

You're not leaking antifreeze are you? If so, the O2 sensors could be off. Those are the obvious things to check for first. Other than that, I don't know. Might try re-setting the computer by pulling the neg. cable and turning on the lights for several minutes. Then try again.

Oh yeah, check to make sure it's getting up to operating temperature so it goes into closed loop ? because it runs richer when cold. Check thermostat and engine temp. sensors.

Maybee it has something to do with the winter fuel. They add more additives in the winter. Has your gas millage dropped also?

The chips do it. I think it's because they run them a little richer because of the added timing.

Like 4d said I had a chip that would blacken the tips to coal in one day. More recently it has taken longer but I have had both chips updated.

Houndog:

Now would be a nice time to have a shop manual if you don't already. The engine temperature sensor could be telling the computer your engine is cold, when it really isn't. That would be my first guess, then an O2 sensor. But, faulty O2's usually cause the check engine light to come on.

A manual should have the values at which the sensors operate, using a volt meter. Don't let this go too long, because it's crapping up the top of the piston and the valves with carbon which can cause detonation, because these areas glow red-hot and set off the mixture prematurely.

Houndog,

You could probably just go to the Ford dealer and ask what the values are. Surely, they'd look them up and you could get it for free. When I get time someday, I'm going to the dealer and ordering a shop manual for my truck, since I plan on keeping it til I'm old and on a cane. They're expensive, but invaluable and explain alot of things a Haynes or Chiltons manual doesn't.

Start with the coolant temp. sensor. (Not to be confused with the gauge sensor) These are known to go bad on all makes and models and will definitely make it run WAY rich. Then, run a good fuel system cleaner through it to get the deposits out of the combustion chamber. It will be fine.

Houndog,

Glad all is well now. Believe this or not, I thought I read somewhere that Exxon gasoline isn't all that good. BP is supposed to be another not so good one. I guess this proves it.

Danny,

Where have you been hiding? Good to see you post.
