should we trade or try to sell?
hi, we are new here and wanted to know your thoughts on if this is a good deal or not we have a 2000 silver lightning and were going to upgrade to the 2001 lightning we took it to two dealers and the best trade in we were offered was 25,800 the truck has been stored all winter and has 4,800 miles, 100% stock ,and is truly spot less something to keep in mind is that we get z-plan price so the dealer it self has no say so on the price of the 2001 (just ford)also if we do the trade in over selling to someone else we dont have to pay taxes on the trade in price (25,800)which means we would have to sell our 2000 for(25,800+tax money(5.75%x25,800=1,483.50) that totals 27283.50 + the price of the add (40 dollars here) so if we cant get 27323.50 its better to just trade it in right????? the reason we are asking this it do you think we should take the time to try to sell ours so that someone that is looking for one can get it before the dealer would get and jack the price up to sell to someone or is that a good trade in price PLEASE LET US KNOW WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS ARE THANK YOU (p.s. we live in N.E. Ohio so maybe the location matters on the prices of these cool trucks)

Personally I would trade it in. I did real good on trading my 00 GT in on my 00 Lightning. I didn't have to pay tax again, which payed off my car. Plus it'll be hard to sell a 00 model when the 01's just came out. Besides everyone want's SUV'S!!! GO FIGURE!!

Lisa,
Personally, I would trade it. Have you ever tried to sell a car yourself? It's a pain in the a**, IMHO. If you feel OK with the price (and it seems fair to me), and you don't know someone personally you would sell to, trade it.
Good luck.

I started out to come down on the side of 2000svt, but by the time I was half way through my argument I decided you should go ahead and trade the sucker. True, a chip would give you better performance than an '01, but hell, chips are cheap, throw one in the new one and you're back in the lead. But with the '01 you shouldn't have to deal with leaky intercoolers or front end clunk, you get better gears, 90mm MAF, aluminum drive shaft, Bilstein shocks, etc. etc. - I say go for it!

I’m not a big fan of trading; you usually take it in the shorts. But that deal sounds hard to beat. It is usually hard to sell one out right for that much money. You have to go through a lot of squirrels to find one with a big enough nut!

I also live in NE Ohio, and most people around here don't even know what a Lightning is, so your market would be limited. I have never traded in a vehicle yet, because I can sell them my self for a lot more. But with the numbers you are giving - Trade It In.
DreaminAboutL:
On trade-in you don't pay tax on value of trade. Cash sale, you pay tax on full amount. Buyer of used vehicle pay sales tax. Still no advantage to being in California.
Lisa: Everytime I've bought recently, I traded something in. I bitched about the amount offered for trade-in, but still can't stand the thought of selling one myself, with all the crap you probably have to put up with from people--unless you're lucky.

Unless you have a local lightning club that might hook you up with someone, you should trade. It's hard to sell a L if you don't let them test drive it, and I sure as hell wouldn't let just anyone get behind the wheel of mine. With the prices you're quoting, it really doesn't make financial sense to sell it yourself. It's a fine gesture to offer it to fellow enthusiasts, but if one isn't knocking down your door--trade it.
Had the same kind of deal with mine going from '99 to '00 with the "Z" plan. They gave me $25k on my '99(12k miles) and with that deal I ended up driving one of the hottest sports vehicles for a year for less than $2k. No regrets.

Trade it!! I sold my '00 black L with 4000 miles. Not a scratch for $26,000. It took over 5 weeks of running an ad in the local paper. I received one call only. I eventually sold it to a friend of a friend.
