Exclamation hids and radio reception

ive had hids in my lows for about a year now and everytime i turn them on out goes my radio signal...i always figured it was just a freak thing, but now that i got another kit for my fogs and its twice as bad. im talking absolutely no reception when both are on...... i tried grounding the lows in different places and stuff like that, the fogs just plug into factory harness so how can it mess with radio??anyone ever heard of hids interfering with radio reception?????

One of those Asian HID kits or a "real" HID kit ?

I have the Sylvania Xenarc HIDs in my Lightning and I have no issues with noise, reception, etc. at all.

Did you check your antenna to be sure it is secure to the fender and the cable is in completely on back of your radio ?

Wrap the ballast in foil and make sure it is grounded. It is usually the ballast making the noise not the bulbs.

Well, obviously it MIGHT matter - the HID's use a ballast to step the voltage up. If the ballast isn't designed and shielded properly, exactly what you are describing could be the result.

Maybe the Xenarcs aren't so dumb afterall...

Yeah, it shouldn't happen, WITH A QUALITY KIT THAT IS! What's with the hatred towards the Xenarcs>??? Couldn't get your hands on any or you couldn't afford them>??? It is a great kit that works perfect.
Any pictures of your install>??? That could give us some answers I am sure. -Mat-

no hatred towards them, its just getting really old hearing about them ****in xenarcs...people who have them say its the answer to everything...the reason im not a xenarc owner because i wont pay 6-700 bucks on lights and not to mention the time it takes to find a good kit thats not too abused

Well the problem is caused by EMF noise from the ballasts. Since no one with Xenarcs (myself included) has the problem, it might actually be true that "you get what you pay for" or "the @#!#in Xenarcs are the solution"

As previously mentioned, wrap the ballasts in foil and ground them and see what happens. If that doesn't help, try disabling one of your lights to see if it is a function of both. If you can't nail it to one of the ballasts then well... get the Xenarcs =)

Just realized you said you put in HIDs on the fogs as well. That means you are almost assuredly using junk ballasts from god knows who. You may want to try (as an experiment) powering the lights on with a seperate electrical system. (to see if the problem is just raw radio noise or some wiring feedback). If it's wiring feedback, you've got a problem in the design of your ballasts. If it's radio noise, just start wrapping everything in foil/copper plate until you find the cause.

It is very easy to make completely crappy HID kits and sell them cheaply. There really is (ok can be) a difference when you pay more.
