My first "real" race (long)....
did not turn out the way I had hoped!! Well, I was out cruising Saturday night looking for someone to play with. I came up on these 2 riced out cars racing and watched them scurry away slower than molasses in winter. One of the drivers was wearing a helmet, and dropping the visor when he got ready to race, I almost crashed because I was laughing so hard.
Then I came up 97-98?? Z28 with some exhaust. I pulled up next to him and asked if he wanted to run, he said what have you got, I said a supercharged 5.4. So it was on. I followed him out of town to a remote stretch of road in the middle of nowhere. Once we stopped he got out and said it would be just a minute because he had to check the pressure in his tires. I was like, "Oh Sh*t, what does he have under the hood?" Once he finished I asked him what he had, he said a ATI Procharger and some other goodies. I was like, "real smart, didn't even ask him what he had before we drove all the way out here", but I said run what you brung I guess. We didn't have a way to start so we went on the 3rd honk. I was doing the honking so I was concentrating more on honking than preparing for my start, so I had a horrible start, I mean really horrible. He immediately pulled about 1 car on me before I even hit it, then by the time I shut it down at 90 he had about 4 or 5 car lengths on me.
We stopped and talked to him afterwards and he told me he had just bought the car and the previous owner said it runs 12.5's at Bandimere, which is about 6000 feet. That would be like 11's at sea level right?
As we were driving back a cop came driving by us, someone must have heard us heating the tires and called the cops. They couldn't do anything since they didn't catch us!! Overall not a bad experience.

Driving with a helmet on the streets? I guess so, I hear f-bodies are have the worst casualty rate (or best?). That sounds like fun, and I have had the cops came a minute too late experience also. That means lay low for a while, and get a better scanner. Cant win 'em all. 12.5 at 6000 feet? That must have been rough. Glad you had fun, took it pretty good, I like that.

There's always someone out there who's gonna beat you, but at least you had fun and didn't get busted.
I don't think wearing a helmet on the street is such a loony idea. If you're in an accident, your body doesn't care whether its on a street or on the track. I wish I had been wearing one when I got t-boned by the Dakota, I would have avoided a nasty bang on the side of my head. I think its probably a comfort issue, a full face helmet is too heavy and restrictive for everyday use, but I wouldn't turn a pedal on my bike without my bike helmet on, and its so light that I don't notice I'm wearing it. I know, I know, there's the ridicule factor, but if I weren't such a chicken I'd consider wearing one when I drove, too. I'll bet a lot of folks wish they had been wearing one at the moment of impact.

Alpha,
I agree, their is always someone else faster out their. I think racing should be fun, not something to make you mad and scream and yell about. As for the kid with the helmet, the funny thing was he would drop the visor like he was a jet fighter pilot preparing for a dog fight. If I was racing a Honda I would want as much protection as possible!
