Cool

I've been running a crankcase filter for a week or two with no ill effects. I bought a Mr. Gasket filter (looks like a mini round K&N), 1/2" to 5/8" plastic adapter and 2 1/2" long 5/8's" hose. A rail is in the way so you can't mount a filter right on the valve cover. You stick the 1/2" end in the filter and 5/8" end in the hose then the hose on the valve cover fitting. I put a rubber plug over the end of the tube that comes down to the valve cover until I can come up with something better. It needs a 5/8" plug to fit in the rubber intake boot with a lip on it so it can't be sucked in to the intake. I bought everything I mentioned above at Autozone.

Thumbs up

Hey gang - oil in the air tube pathway is in no way normal! I finally looked in the TBI tube and sure enough there was some oil in there. Well a phone call was made to Summit for 2 #KNN-62-1340 valve cover breathers. Hooked everything up last evening - works fine - NO fluctuating idle! I will post if any problems arise (doubtful). I apologize to you guys for my first fix - I was wrong on that one!

Hey Cruiser,

What all did you have to use to get it to work with the breathers you got?

Also, you DID leave the PCV valve itself alone, didn't you? You could replace the oil fill cap assembly though with no problem. In fact, that would be great and even better ventilation. See, those phone salespeople don't know everything, but they make you feel like they do!!

Exclamation

gforce - go back to page 10 or so and read my first post on this matter - oooppps - close but no cigar on that one! Since I had already cut the fresh air tube to the valve cover, removed the hose that was put in to extend the tube, used the end from the bellows, plugged into 90deg elbow at valve cover, chicken strapped to EGR tube, oiled and installed filter, plugged hole in bellows. Just be sure to buy 2 filters, one being cleaned, one on the truck. The biggest item is to clamp the two connections at cover and filter! Work smart not hard - performance will be the same!

BadBolt,

Well, that looks shi**y!! I wonder what the intercooler looks like. Like I've said all along, this ain't good.

You guys that continue to ignore this stuff because a better intercooler is on the way are just fooling yourselves. It will happen all over again. I don't mean to make anyone mad - I'm really just trying to help.

B777 said this about his T-Bird SC, "I had the intercooler off once to clean it and install a fan on it and I boroscoped the inside and there was a nice black coating of sludge all over the passages."

Wait a minute - I know what will get your attention. THIS WILL SLOW YOU DOWN AT THE TRACK!!!

While I was reading this post, a thought came to me.

Do you think burnt oil getting into the intake might be causing the intercooler to corode, and leak?

Isn't it true that oil becomes slightly acidic due to the combustion procces in a internal combustion engine?

Just a thought, what do you all think?

IMHO, I think the acidic, oily mess on the I/C is the cause, and I'll be installing a K&N breather to the driver's side valve cover and see what happens.</font>

My T/B looks as bad or maybe worse than the pix you posted. It got so bad at one time that oil was leaking out of the black flextube between where the MAF & flextube connect. Part of the reason it was leaking out is that the clamp was slightly loose. Really I am glad that it leaked otherwise I might have never known about the problem until it was too late.
Friday I am going to the local Hotrod Barn & pickup a K&N crankcase vent filter & we'll take care of this problem which Ford obviously doesn't care to.

Have you had the JL ram air on your L long enough to tell if it actually makes a difference in performance.
Thanks

beechwood,

Yes, the ram air helps. But IMHO the single biggest performance improvement on these trucks at this time is the chip. Then a good air system and from what I've read, gears although I don't have them yet. Nitrous ranks up there too, but I don't think I'll be doing that. Oh, then there's the lower pulley which I have coming and I don't know how much it helps yet. See how this truck sucks the money out of your pants?

gforce,
Tell me about it. I had my L 1 month & ordered $750.00 worth of ProM MAF/K&N filter & Swanson chip. But you know what. I'd do it over again in a heartbeat. It made a world of difference. I took both items off before taking mine back for the dealer to install the new driver side valve cover & still haven't put them back on. Now it feels as though it wouldn't pull a greasy string out of a cats a**. That will change this weekend, nice weather & i'll feel like putting them back on.
