Thumbs down Piston Slap, I think.

When I started my truck last night after sitting in the cold for a few hours I heard a knock in the motor for about 10 minutes. This is the second time in a month. Should I be concerned and get this fixed now? I've heard that it won't hurt the motor, but I'm unsure. It only happens when it's real cold.

Question

Ack, how old is your '99? It may be slap. If it lasted 10m, I would definately get it checked out.

It has 16k miles on the odometer. I just bought it used about 600 miles ago.

Ugh that piston.wav is *EXACLY* what mine is doing but much worse. It's very audible at low RPM idle. When it is between gears while shifting there is a *VERY* loud and noticable pinging noise from the engine while at medium throttle. Mines done it since I got the truck at 18k miles, till now at 25k. The truck is actually in the service department and ford said its a "normal characteristic" of our engines. I honestly do not think this could be good for the engine so I let mine warm up for at least 5 minutes before driving it.
I've got a '99 lightning and SVT says the build number is #264 (not a typo) and was built on 4-15-99. I wish I had more info on the slapping noise..

I was told that it's normal when it's really cold to hear the noise with forged internals. I asked them why all Lightning don't do it then. Answer, you haven't caught them at the right time. Mine only does it about 1 out of every like 50 cold starts, but when it does I feel like taking it back to the dealer until they fix it. My Lightning seems to run great, I wonder if there are any adverse effects?

Anyone get their motor replaced because of it?
