I just got the Toyo's (295/45/18) today. $238.00 each and a treadwear of 420. The F1's are treadwear 300. I swear just what little I drove them today they seam better than the F1's. I was going to get the Nitto's (305/40/18) but the speedo would be off and my 3:55's would become about 3:10's.

actually jerry your 3.55's would be more like 3.73's. b/c with the 295/45/18's your tire height would be 28.45" and with a 305/40/18 that would shorten it to around 27.61" or there about. so a shorter tire would make the lower gear. no flame intended. but you would still have to have your chip reburned so that sux. i want an exact 295/45/18 like the f1s.

Question

Jerry, I assume you are talking about the Toyo S/T's? Where did you get them? I don't see them listed at The Tire Rack or Discount Tire web sites.

Rusty, I could be wrong on the size of the Nitto's. They have a 305/?/18 that is 2.5" taller than our 295/45/18. Nathan and someone else on the board has them, and that taller tire would put me around a 3:10 ratio.

Alpha, yes that is the tire I bought (Toyo Proxes S/T's). Discount is not a dealer, but ordered them for me. $238.00 each. Go to Toyo's web site and do a dealer search. There were Toyo dealers all over San Antonio, (100 miles away) but only one in Austin 30 miles from me. Discount gave me a price as good as a Toyo dealer! After driving to work this morning I know I got the right tire!!! I floored it around several curves that the F1's would let go on, but the Toyo's held tight. This makes no since. The Toyo is supposed to be harder!

Hey Jerry-

I am the other one running the Nitto's. They are actually 305/55/18's. Overall diameter of 31.21..

I haven't had a "fair" chance on the strip with them yet, but they do spin a LOT less than the F1's.

The final ratio is more like 3.23's...

ie (28.45/31.21)*3.55=3.23. Hey! You are the one corrected ME on that in the first place right?

At first I was planning on going to 4.10's, and that would put my final ratio close to 3.73's...

I'm planning on some other mods to overcome my loss of torque on the gear ratio thing...

Also, the top end fells fantastic... some of my LS1 friends are complaining that I was easier to catch on the top end... now they are struggling a little more. My hole shot on them is not as dramatic tho...
ie. (28.21/31).

alphadoggy,
I'm also looking at the Toyo Proxes S/T, and I've been waiting to see what Jerry thought of them. I have price shopped and the best I've found the Toyos for so far is mail ordering them from treadeway.com. I can buy four tires (including S&H) for $840. Get them nounted and balanced for $40 and I'm into a new set with change back from $900. Unless Jerry decides he doesn't like them I think I'll give them a try. I'm trying to get every mile I can out of the F1's, so I'm probably a few weeks away from ordering.

Jerry Jordan,
Thanks for being the test pilot on the Toyos. I'm glad to hear you like them. If your first impression changes please post something.

LD: I corrected you

Tampa Bay: 295 is really the widest you can go on 9.5" Infact 295/35/18 is spec'd to fit 10-11.5 (Though people are running them on stock rims). There is a 305/40 but I dont know it's specs. Mismatching tire width (too wide) and wheel width will hurt grip.

Alpha: I think Discount Tire sell them - don't know why they dont have them on their website. see also www.nittotire.com

Rusty: You might want to wait for the Nitto Drag's to come out: https://www.f150online.com/f150board...ML/008667.html

Alpha: Does this help... Toyo tire dealers in your area (not Nitto).

Classic Tire - 304 Giant Oak Ave. - Thousand Oaks, CA 91320 - (805) 498-4190

Moorpark Community Tire - 480 Moorpark Ave.
Moorpark, CA 93021 - (805) 523-7397

Magic Muffler - 399 Thousand Oaks Blvd Thousand Oaks, CA 91360 - (805) 496-2436

Tire Source Inc. - 2030 Sinaloa Rd. - Simi Valley, CA 93065 - (805) 520-9330

Woodland Hills Chevrolet - 6111 Topanga Canyon Blvd. - Woodland Hills, CA 91367 - (818) 887-7111

Wesco Track & Tire - 8441 Sepulveda Blvd. -Sepulveda, CA 91343 - (818) 894-3700

The treadway.com place may have better prices, if you can get the correct address.

alpha,

Looks like their server is down right now, and I didn't bookmark the page, but I believe it's http://treadeway.com/. They didn't list the Proxes S/T in our size on the site so I called the 800 number. I don't have the number with me now, but if you'd like I can post it when I get home.

Dreamin-

My turn to correct you...

Nitto says the recommended rim width for the 305/55/18 404 Extreme Force is 8.5 to 11.5...

They also say that 9.5 is the "ideal" size.

See here:

http://turbo.nittotire.com/tire_nt404_sizes.asp

Oooh boy! Check out the Revolutions per mile! 666!! Pretty scary!!!

WICKED TIRES!!!

Moonshine, the more I drive on these tires the more I like them. You beat the Hell out of my price! $238.00 plus balance and tax. Then I let them talk me into sipeing them for $10.00 each. I don't know if this did any good (they only did the middle of the tire, said on a performance tire to leave the outside and inside for 2.5" alone) but my F1's never held this well. You need to know I am running without my chip. With the innercooler dry it pings worse than it ever did. So I don't know how they will do with the chip. Even if I got took on the price of the tires, I had no choice. I had 27,700 miles on the F1's and they were slick as a table top. The last few months it has rained every other day. I was going down the highway the other day in the rain @ about 60; went to change lanes and ran over a lane stripe, the back of the truck was at a 45 degree angle to the lane. Somehow she just straitened out without a hitch. But the pucker factor was high. I had to do something! Even at this price if they last 40,000 miles I'll be way ahead.

Jerry

LD: Good point... the 305/55 is taller so I guess it works!

Anyone running Nitto drag's on the street? Are the side-walls really soft making the L feel 'squirmy' ?
