Question Just installed the S/B throttle body...

and now there is a "whistling" sound at part throttle. Sounds like a possible vacuum leak. Anyone else have this same issue? I can not find any hoses unplugged, and I tightened the tb and clamp very well. Is it possible for the tb to be leaking somehow? I can not hear it unless I am in the cab. Kinda irritating. It may just be more air sucking through the filter easier...?

Throttle response is 100% better, BTW!

I had this problem, and so did a few others. Like everyone else, the noise went away after a couple of weeks. Never did find out what that noise was. I could only hear it at atop lights, and not from the outside of the truck. When I shuut the engine off, it seems as though somehthing was slowing down to a halt.

Well, the noise went away.

I was surprised myself to hear that, I love the sound of that extra air rushing into the motor

On my 1987 GT that I used to have, I had installed a 75mm throttle body on it and from the very start I had a slight whistle and it really annoyed me. I ended up taking it off and really inspected it closely. I finally figured out that the problem was a poorly constructed throttle blade. The blade was not even close to fitting properly. I guess that it was not sealing and that seemed to cause the whistle.

That would make sense why Tundra's stopped after a while. The carbon build up and sealed itself.

Just my .02

I would agree that you want a good fitting blade but, you don't want it to seal. The only time it is sealed is when it is off. No air will get thru for your engine to breath.

Before this gets out of hand, just let me say that in no way was I questioning what you said in your post. In fact, like I said, I was actually questioning what I had said. The reason that I knew that it was a poorly constructed throttle plate was that I took the original Ford throttle body and looked at the clearences on it compared to the larger one that I purchased and the larger one had very sloppy gaps around the perimeter of it. I was only posting my thoughts of what the problem might be with wrightlightnings's throttle body.

For all I know it could be something totally different, and not have a thing to do with the throttle blade.

Hey,
I'm not trying to start a war here. I was just stating some of the things that I know of and what makes sense to me. If I am wrong, please tell me and how. I am interested just as much as the next about the stuff for our L and what we have purchased and can further modify if needed. Please don't take it the wrong way!

Just a little added information. That is not a sloppy gap. The perimeter clearance around the throttle blade was designed that way. If you study the other Ford throttle bodies you will see a "P" hole in the blade(s). No the sound is not a vacuum leak or anything like that. This is a very thin wall casting and from a NVH stand point it would never be tolerated by a customer in production. Unless of course you purchased a Cobra R. In that case your throttle blade was stamped Cobra R.

BABolt....

Not sure if you were aware, but the sloppy gap that I was refering to was on a throttle body that I had on a Mustang. The reason that it was sloppy was that I later found that the throttle body that I bought was actually someone elses product that someone bored out and then tried to fab up a throttle blade for it. The gap around the inside was not even uniform. When you held it up to the light you could really see the poor quality of the throttle blade. Unfortunate for me......

Thanks everyone for all of the posts. I am not unhappy with the throttle body at all. The throttle response is terrific. Just curious why it only "whistles" at slight to part throttle? I guess when I go full throttle I wouldn't be able to hear it anyway with that blower whine!!! :-)

There is an idle air solenoid controlled by the computer that lets varying amounts of air in when the throttle blade is(are) completely closed.

Thanks Mark_2kL

I was pretty sure that it was supposed to make a good seal. Had me re-thinking my comment for a minute there.

OK
I agree with you there. But, what I would like to point out also is that there are those little holes in the orig. TB plates. Can you explain the sealing effect to me of those? I don't believe there should be a totoal seal there.

Have you ever seen how a whistle is made?

The same thing that makes a whistle whistle is what makes your SB throttle body whistle at part throttle. It's more pronounced than the smaller dual bores because of it's size.

My 2 cents.....
