Autometer Guage Pod = Crapola

Just bought a 2 gauge autometer pillar pod. Man this thing is CHEAP! The plastic is so chincy and it doesn't fit worth a damn. Now Im stuck having to decide whether to mount it way up the pillar (where the fit is even worse) to cover the "oh ****" holes, or mount it lower and try to cover one of the holes another way. Guess I could get a three hole pod, but then Ive got a hole Im not using.

Right now Im leaning strongly toward making a custom fiberglass piece for the transmission tunnel, would be some work but at least it would be quality. I would be willing to pay the 100-150 dollars or whatever, to have a gauge pod that was made out of quality plastic and replaced the stock pillar, not just covered it up.

Mine fit perfectly. I didn't use it as a cover though, How would you have any room to do your wiring and such? It just fits right in place of the stock one. For the mounting holes I used the stock handle threads in the a-pillar with a pair of machine screws. Mine is just as solid as the stock one.

I bought the ProPod from RPM Outlet.

Fits great, looks good - just added 1 tiny screw at the top, behind the weatherstrip.

No holes anywhere else, looks as factory as can be.

I know 3 other Lightning owners who have had the same experience....

Your suppose to run the wires behind the stock plastic then drill a hole in it to get the wires to the guages. The pod I have you cannot mount by its self, it must go on top of the factory plastic. Im pretty sure the full pillar models are designed that way too, but I guess you don't have to do it that way. The pod actually fits "ok" when it is mounted low on the pillar, but then I've got a big hole from where the "oh sh*t) handle used to be. Do you have any pics of your setup?

B-Man, did you mount your Pro-pod by its self or over the factory piece? It doesn't look to bad maybe I'll try that out.

The Propod mounts by itself on the A-pillar.

I made a wiring harness for all of the gauges with a 9 pin connector at the end. It connects to all the gauge sending units, power wires, lighting wires, etc. down in the kick panel. That let me install the pod and remove it whenever I might need to, just by unplugging the harness.

Update

Well here is a little update on the pod situation in case anyone is interested. I emailed Autometer and told them about the problem, I was very pleased with their customer service. They were very quick to respond, and offered to replace my pod for a full pillar version.

Since I was so unimpressed with the first pod I had bought from Autometer, I decided to go ahead and order a Propod as well, and compare the two. I ordered the Propod from RPMoutlet, what a fiasco that was. I had a printed receipt for my order yet somehow it got lost in the shuffle and was never sent to me. I tried to call their "help desk" which is perpetually busy (I think they just leave it off the hook or something), next I called their order line (which is never busy) the guy I talked to was pretty rude and just told me to call the help desk again. So then I took up emailing them. My first two emails were polite, just asking for a tracking number. The responses I got sounded like they were written by a drunk 3rd grader. After my third email, in which I informed them I would be disputing the charge on my card, I got a call from a very nice woman named Barbara. In the end they shipped it 2 Day, so whatever it all got taken care of, but I might think twice about ordering there again.

So, to the point. I took some pictures of both pods together so everyone can get a good idea of how they compare. I like the texture of the propod better, but the autometer just fits a little better, and the gauge openings are placed a little lower on the pod so they are closer to the dash, which I like.
