Thumbs up I was impressed. If you live in So. Cal., take a look!

I was impressed!!!

When I discovered that my I/C was starting to leak, I drove the L to Sunset Ford in Westminster, CA. I told the service writer, Steve, that it was leaking. He did not send the L into be tested. He took my word for it and ordered the parts. He knew exactly what to order. That was on a Friday. By next Wednesday, the parts were in. I set an appointment for the next Tuesday at 8:00 am.

I drove the L up to the service department and Steve came right up. I asked Steve if he knew about the CLUNK. Steve knew exactly what I was talking about and said that they would also take care of it.

I went to the cashier to rent a car so that I could get back home when I discovered that Steve had already set up a FREE rental for me.

By 4:00 PM THAT day, Steve called and said that the truck was ready. Tomorrow I’ll do some testing for the CLUNK but all in all, I was very impressed with how all of it was handled with very little inconvenience and with the L only a few hours out of my hands.

I would definitely recommend this Ford store for your L needs.

I have an interesting way to discern if the I/C is leaking even before it is noticed in the reservoir. I look at the intercooler reservoir almost every day so that I would notice any drop in coolant. BUT when I would use the "panel" for out side air, my wife started noticing a "coolant" smell a couple weeks before I noticed any fluid drop in the coolant tank. About a week before I started noticing a drop in fluid, I also started to notice the coolant smell. If you start to notice a coolant smell when driving, then really watch the I/C tank.

Jim
Sounds like a great service experience
We all wish all dealers were like that ....

Oops then I woke up ....

If the Intercooler leak is internal only then the panel settings shouldnt pick up any coolant odor. If the heater hose is leaking on the coil pack however that would be picked up by the panel vents. You should check the heater hose to make sure its not leaking too ...

Veddy interesting, Jim. I went to my dealer yesterday, and the service advisor told me that the i/c parts are still on national back order. Wonder how you got yours so quickly? I have a hunch. I made sure that he talked to Jake at the Tech Service hotline. He ordered out the parts that Jake told him to. These may be the new parts that Scarpello was referring to in the Mustang chat room. I am not in a big hurry to fix mine. It seems to run fine with distilled water in the reservoir, and I would rather wait and get it fixed with parts that, theoretically, won't fail.

That's exactly what I also thought but I could not find any other leak so I made a conclusion. So far, now that the I/C has been replaced, I do not smell any coolant. But I will keep testing.

George

You made me think. I hope I didn't get some early 2000 part that will go again.

I would have to concur with Jim on this one. I definitely smelled coolant for a week or two before my reservoir level dropped enough to see it on the side.

Haven't done the fix yet as mine's in storage and hoping for the possible "real" fix.

Jim,

Maybe you've done so already but if not you should write a letter or talk to Steve's manager on his great service, sounds like he deserves it. My 02.

No, L2, and anything I have to say on the matter is purely speculation and/or wishful thinking. When I took my truck in for the leak in November I also brought in a copy of an RO that someone else on the board faxed me showing the p/n's that were required to replace his intercooler. These had to be the original parts. However, I made sure that my service manager also called Jake at the tech hotline for the latest skinny on the fix, and he ordered the parts that Jake told him to. Now, because several have had their i/c's replaced since that time, and my parts are still on b/o, I have made a leap of faith to assume that they are the parts that Scarpello alluded to, which are supposedly going to be available in March or April. So, in the meantime, I keep adding distilled water and water pump lube as needed, and keep my fingers crossed that I WONT hear from the dealer until he gets THE FIX. Ultimately, though, you know that Ford is going to fix it, its got to be costly to keep r and r'ing every i/c out there. And I don't usually buy extended warranties, but, because of the technology involved in an L. in this case I did, so Ford has another 4 years to come up with a fix for me. I hope the rest of you L. purchasers are getting the extended warranty, too, it may just come in handy.
