Question Drag tire question

Wife got me a set of MT ET Streets 26 x 11.5 x 16 on 10" black steel rims for Christmas. I have searched and found the way to launch these but still have a few questions. I am running a superchip R9 with an airaid and fabricated x pipe bolted in place of muffler. Does the drop of 2.5" in tire height affect the computer and tranny shifts? Do I need to reprogram for the smaller tires? Is there any conditioning I need to do to these tires and if so any details. I found that 18 psi should work best. Anything else I should know?

Cool

I run about 18 pounds in mine. Much lower and they get a little too squirrelly for my taste. Dropping the wheel diameter requires no reprogramming. The truck shifts based on rpm. It just means that your truck will be shifting into 2nd and 3rd gear quicker than a Lightning say with larger diameter tires (providing you are running the same gears). However, all things being equal, both trucks will be shifting at the same rpm. You will also be turning higher rpm at the finish line.

The first time you get them in the box, roast the holy @&%#* out of them. After that
just warm them up and let her fly.

I have the same tires and run an R9. I go with 18-psi and do a burnout long enough to see smoke through the sideview mirror. I can launch my L at almost 2000 RPM with no problem. To be honest I can run faster and quicker with my street tires. The advantage of the slicks is consistant launching and you don't kill your F1's.

sixpipes, about that initial burnout, can you do that right before the first run? I'd like to do it in front of an audience, and I found a place that sells them for a decent price.

shonut, the one thing i know will be affected is what the speedometer will be reading. when it says your doing 100mph, you really will be doing like 90-95. i think im right, or is it vise versa guys? if im right, this will mean you will be putting on more miles than you actually drove the truck, but not by much. anyone else know about this? i think im right, right?!? later, Mike : )

This is another one of those topic that make me crazy. I have cal-trac and am getting 1.9 60 times nearly every time and 13.1 - 13.19 nearly every time. Are you telling me the new wheels and slicks I order will do nothing but slow my quarter et down. What a pisser!

Thanks for the information.

I broke mine in at Ennis and they hooked real good after about a 15 second roasting. Get it on video (yeah, like I have to tell you that) because the coating on the tires really makes them easy to spin the first time. Your friends will be impressed.

DogLeg: IMHO the only way slicks will slow you down or really not give you a better 60ft. is only if your truck isn't making enough power! to make it past the 60 ft. any faster! believe me slicks DO help 60 ft. we just have to make the power to really get the full benifit from them.... JL

As always thanks to all for the info. I can't wait to bolt these on. My tack is about 30 miles away. Would you all drive that distance on the drag tires or do the change at the track. Thanks again...

I drove that distance once, but I won't do it again. And I definitely wouldn't put them on the road if you haven't broken them in. These tires are very unstable around corners and are designed to work in a straight line. Besides, you'll pick up every piece of loose gravel between your house and the track.

JL is on the money with the extra horsepower thing. The more power you make, the more you need the MTs. And SS is right on the speedo error. Mine is showing ~120mph when my actual trap speed is 105.

No to be a smart a$$ here but why look at the speedo when drag racing when you will get a timeslip? I like to focus on the tach and boost gauge when racing then getting stopped just after crossing the finish line. Granted, if you drive with them on the street, different matter.
