Now you can have the same information that your favorite magazine writer starts with.

MORE OF EVERYTHING OWNERS HAVE LEARNED TO LOVE

The Ford Special Vehicle Team's 2001 edition of the SVT F-150 Lightning elevates this niche vehicle to a higher level of performance and appearance. More horsepower, new rear-axle gearing, suspension fine-tuning and several distinctive exterior appearance changes make this SVT Lightning the most appealing ever, according to John Coletti, chief engineer at Ford Special Vehicle Engineering.

"The 2001 SVT Lightning gives owners everything they have learned to love, but more of it," Coletti says. "It's the most powerful, best-handling one we've yet produced, and some dramatic design changes make this 2001 model instantly recognizable."

"This is a performance truck that hit its market niche target right in the bull's-eye," says Tom Scarpello, Ford specialty vehicle marketing manager. "We design and engineer these vehicles for discriminating enthusiasts who know what they want and expect. Our plan is to keep meeting or exceeding their expectations, and this vehicle will just keep getting better and better. That's the way it has to be, particularly for this customer."

ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN
For 2001, the SVT Lightning's SOHC 5.4-liter Triton™ V8 engine develops 380 horsepower at 4,750 rpm, up 20 horsepower from the 2000 model. Torque output is increased by 10 foot-pounds, to 450 at 3,250 rpm.

The engineering team achieved these increases by enlarging the air inlet system for better engine breathing, by improving intercooler efficiency, and redesigning the lower intake manifold to improve air flow (see separate powertrain release for details).

The engineers achieved additional performance increases with a new rear axle ratio, with "shorter" 3.73:1 crown and pinion gear set instead of the previous 3.55:1 ratio. This improves off-the-line performance, and is a key factor in reducing zero to 60 mph time from 6.2 to 5.8 seconds. Because of the higher driveline loads and rotational speeds, a new 4.5-inch aluminum drive shaft has replaced the previous 3.5-inch steel unit.

SUSPENSION AND CHASSIS
The SVT Lightning's suspension system, which lowers the truck half an inch in front and two inches in the rear, is largely unchanged for 2001. At the front is a short- and long-arm system with coil springs and a 31mm solid stabilizer bar; the rear is a solid axle with five-leaf springs and a 23mm solid stabilizer bar.

New shock absorbers for 2001 are monotube Bilstein gas-charged units at all four corners. The damping characteristics of these shocks improve wheel control, while significantly improving the feel of the SVT Lightning's ride.

Also for 2001, the specially developed 295/45ZR-18 Goodyear™ Eagle F1-GS™ unidirectional tires are built with the next generation F1 GS rubber compound. This new compound improves the tires' grip capability.

EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR
The SVT F-150 Lightning is built on the F-Series regular cab, short-wheelbase chassis, giving the lightest possible weight, optimum handling and acceleration. This configuration also provides a dynamic visual presence, which is enhanced with design changes for 2001.

Exterior elements that distinguish the 2001 SVT Lightning include new upper and lower front grilles with a horizontal billet-bar design that is unique to Lightning in the F-Series line. All the lights also are new for 2001. The headlights, taillights, side-marker lights, and the signature round fog lights all have clear, crystalline lenses found only on Lightning, which give the exterior a clean, jewel-like appearance.

The cab's center high-mounted stop lamp also is unique to Lightning, with 10 light-emitting diodes flanked by two clear-lens cargo lights.

The cast aluminum-alloy, five-spoke wheels measure 18 x 9.5 inches and are restyled for 2001 with a sharper-edged design, which further distinguishes this vehicle from previous models.

The 2001 SVT Lightning's interior continues the combination of Ebony textured leather and Medium Graphite cloth trim, 40/60 split bench seat with center jump seat, and the SVT-signature white-faced gauges.

New for 2001, and in response to customer demand, are sun visors with lighted vanity mirrors. These new visors also have auxiliary blades that can be flipped to the side to add shade to the top of the side windows.

EQUIPMENT AND PRICE
The SVT Lightning's complement of standard equipment remains the same for 2001, and includes front air bags with a passenger airbag deactivation switch; anti-lock braking system; six-way power driver's seat with special lateral bolstering; a six-disc CD changer; power side windows, door locks and outside mirrors; engine oil cooler; SecuriLock™ passive anti-theft system and remote keyless entry, and a Class III towing package.

The only option available for the SVT Lightning is a factory-installed soft tonneau cover. The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price for this option is unchanged for 2001 at $150.

The 2001 SVT Lightning's MSRP is $32,300 (including destination and delivery).

Powertrain

BREATHING, GEARING PRODUCE PERFORMANCE INCREASE

Powertrain enhancements in the 2001 Ford SVT F-150 Lightning reinforce the vehicle's reputation as the world's highest-performance production pickup truck. Changes that increase airflow in the intake system and a numerically higher final drive ratio were Special Vehicle Engineering's primary methods for achieving performance improvements.

All told, powertrain upgrades have cut the SVT Lightning's zero to 60 mph time from 6.2 seconds to 5.8 seconds. On the drag strip, quarter-mile times have dropped from 14.6 seconds at 97 mph to 13.9 seconds at 100 mph.

ENGINE
For 2001, output of the SVT F-150 Lightning's 5.4-liter, SOHC Triton™ V8 engine is increased 20 horsepower and 10 foot-pounds of torque. Horsepower is up to 380 at 4,750 rpm, while torque is rated at 450 foot-pounds at 3,250 rpm. Also for 2001, the Lightning meets federal Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV) standards for tailpipe emissions.

SVE engineers achieved the increase in horsepower and torque by improving the engine's breathing capabilities at several points in the intake system.

A larger air intake opening in the left-front inner fender begins the process. In 2001 models, this opening is 50 percent larger, and the tube that ducts air from the fender opening to the filter box also is enlarged, leading to an inlet opening in the filter box that is 26 percent larger. The air filter itself is unchanged, but the outlet opening is 15 percent larger. Farther downstream the mass air sensor is increased from 80 to 90mm.

These changes combine to reduce restriction of airflow to the throttle body, which remains unchanged: dual 57mm bores with butterfly valves that open simultaneously, not in stages. This gives the engine exceptional throttle response by rapidly delivering large volumes of air to the supercharger. The Roots-type Eaton™ Generation IV supercharger has a cast aluminum case, machined aluminum internal rotors, and its own dedicated drive belt. There are no internal changes for 2001.

The supercharger compresses the air to eight psi, and below it, a water-to-air intercooler removes heat gained during compression to make a denser, more powerful compressed air charge. For 2001, the intercooler receives an additional row of cooling tubes to increase its efficiency and improve power output.

In the final phase of the intake path, a new casting for the lower intake manifold is designed with reshaped ports that provide improved air flow to the cylinder heads. Engineers made an additional improvement for heat management by separating the engine coolant crossover passage from the intake manifold. This change keeps the heat of the coolant away from the manifold, improving heat distribution along the cylinders.

The Triton V8's cast-iron block features a "deep skirt" design for increased rigidity, and it contains a forged steel crankshaft, sinter-forged alloy connecting rods, and forged pistons. These robust pistons are specially designed to withstand the added combustion pressure generated by supercharging. Dished tops lower the engine's compression ratio to 8.4:1, and a friction-reducing coating on the pistons' sliding surfaces allows the engine to gather revs more quickly, reducing wear on the piston and bore surfaces.

The engine's aluminum-alloy heads contain chain-driven, single overhead camshafts that activate roller-finger followers with hydraulic lash adjustment. The heads' intake ports and 44.5mm intake valves swirl the air-fuel mixture into the combustion chambers, which also improves combustion characteristics.

Tuned, cast-iron exhaust manifolds feed into the side-exit, dual-exhaust system. The Ford Super Engine Cooling package and an engine oil cooler provide additional cooling capacity for this high-performance engine.

TRANSMISSION
The SVT Lightning's 4R100 four-speed automatic transmission is unchanged for 2001. This specially developed unit contains components used in the Super Duty F-Series transmission for the Power Stroke ®™ diesel engine. The SVT Lightning is equipped with an Auxiliary Transmission Cooler package, which helps maintain the condition of the transmission fluid.

DRIVESHAFT AND REAR AXLE
The 2001 SVT F-150 Lightning is fitted with a new 4.5-inch aluminum drive shaft connecting the transmission with the 9.75-inch limited slip differential. This shaft is required to handle the higher rotational speeds developed with the new rear axle gear ratio, changed from the previous 3.55:1 to 3.73:1. The numerically higher ratio gives better off-the-line performance, and also improves the dynamic "feel" of the vehicle during standing-start launches.

Im glad you posted this. What this basicaly says it, 3.73,90mm mass air. This along with engine tuning is what is doing the 7 tenth drop.

this is good news for us lightning owners already with a air intake. We already did away with what they improved (intake) Everything else is the same,box,filter,blower.......

I bet when they come out,You will see the lower intake is the same with an upgrade intercooler(which you cannot see)
They claim 13.9 now,Most of us already get this stock I dont see much different but I will be going to 3.73s

Driving Dynamics

NEW BILSTEIN SHOCKS CONTRIBUTE TO IMPROVED RIDE

The suspension system developed for this 4,600-pound, high-performance pickup gives it not only remarkably agile handling, but also an unexpectedly civilized ride.

The 2001 Ford SVT F-150 Lightning rides even better than its predecessors, thanks to new Bilstein shock absorbers with elevated wheel control capabilities.

"Bilstein is well-known and respected for their performance shock absorbers," says Al Suydam, SVT Lightning program manager. "We like them because they are a monotube design with very good damping characteristics and they're very consistent from part to part, which is tough to do sometimes with shock absorbers. They improve the SVT Lightning's ride substantially."

The Bilstein shocks are particularly effective on the rebound stroke, and the improved ride is especially noticeable on undulating road surfaces.

In addition to the new Bilstein dampers, the SVT Lightning front suspension consists of upper and lower A-arms, 650 lb./in. SVT coil springs, and a specially designed 31mm solid stabilizer bar. This setup lowers front-end ride height by half an inch.

At the rear, ride height has been lowered by two inches with a 200 lb./in. SVT five-leaf spring system that replaces the standard F-150 three-leaf unit. A SVT 23mm solid stabilizer bar limits body lean and helps balance traction during cornering. The right rear Bilstein shock is staggered toward the front of the vehicle, which limits axle tramp under full-throttle acceleration.

A standard F-150 power-assisted recirculating ball steering system feels responsive and gives the driver valuable feedback about tire grip and surface conditions. The Goodyear Eagle 295/45ZR-18 F1-GS performance tires are the primary contributor to the SVT Ligntning's steering feel and feedback.

BRAKES
Special Vehicle Engineering chose the brakes on the much larger and heavier F-250 Super Duty pickup truck as the starting point for the SVT Lightning's four-wheel disc system. Compared to the rotors of the standard F-150, SVT Lightning's 12.1-inch diameter vented front rotors are 4.0 mm thicker. When the twin-piston calipers clamp down, the rotors' internal vanes rapidly and effectively dissipate heat that builds up under hard braking.

At the rear, solid rotors measure 13.1 inches in diameter and are fitted with single-piston calipers.

Anti-lock brakes are standard on the SVT Lightning - a four-wheel, three-channel system.

In Ford testing, the SVT Lightning stops from 60 mph in just 137 feet. On an 80-foot slalom course, the truck posts a speed of 63.6 mph, and on a 100-foot skidpad it reaches 0.85g lateral acceleration, an extraordinary figure for a pickup truck.

Design

A DISTINCTIVE NEW LOOK

New designs for the front grilles, head- and taillights, and the wheels result in significant appearance changes in the 2001 Ford SVT F-150 Lightning.

"Several new exterior features for the 2001 Lightning make this vehicle very distinctive," says John Coletti, chief engineer, Ford Special Vehicle Engineering. "There'll be no mistaking it from previous SVT Lightning models, and now it's even more strongly differentiated from the standard F-150 pickups."

The upper and lower front grilles now feature a horizontal billet bar design, which strengthens the vehicle's low, wide appearance. This also makes the SVT Lightning stand out more distinctly from other F-150 models, which maintain the previous honeycomb grille design.

New designs for all lighting also differentiate the 2001 SVT Lightning from other models and its predecessors. Headlights, taillights, side marker lights, and the SVT Lightning's signature round fog lights all now feature clear, crystalline lenses. Each of the lens surfaces is marked with very faint horizontal lines, which draw the eye to the light's exterior plane instead of back to the reflector and bulb.

The center high-mounted stop lamp on the back of the cab now consists of 10 light-emitting diodes. In the F-150 model lineup, these LED lights are unique to the SVT Lightning. LEDs illuminate more quickly than conventional bulbs. The LED high-mounted stop lamp is flanked by two clear-lens cargo lights.

The 2001 SVT Lightning's five-spoke alloy wheels have been restyled. The wheel's center cap is unchanged, as are the diameter, width and offset, but the spokes have a bolder, sharper-edged design that add another point of distinction for the vehicle.

Other exterior elements that distinguish the SVT Lightning from standard F-150 models include the front fascia with SVT signature round driving lamps; the rocker sill extensions that visually link the front fascia and rear bumper; and twin three-inch, ceramic-coated exhaust tips with rounded ends that tuck under a distinctive scallop in the rocker panel, just ahead of the right-rear wheel.

Exterior color choices are unchanged for 2001: Bright Red Clearcoat, Black Clearcoat, Oxford White Clearcoat, and Silver Clearcoat Metallic.

One change was made to the 2001 SVT Lightning's interior: New sun visors have vanity lights, as well as auxiliary blades that can be flipped to the side while the main blade shades the top of the windshield.

The interior is trimmed in a combination of Ebony textured leather and Medium Graphite cloth. Enhanced lateral bolstering on the bottoms and backs of the two primary seats add support to offset cornering g-forces. The 40/60 split bench has six-way power for the driver's seat, and a center jump seat provides room for a third passenger. Flipped down, the jump seat becomes a convenient central armrest with storage bin and cup holders.

The instrument cluster contains SVT-signature white-faced gauges, which are electroluminescent and at night change to a blue-green color with brilliant orange needles. The cluster includes a supercharger boost gauge.

Special Features

EQUIPPED FOR ENJOYMENT AND EXCITEMENT

A vehicle with the performance capabilities and looks of the 2001 Ford SVT F-150 Lightning requires significant standard-feature content to satisfy its customers, according to Tom Scarpello, Ford specialty vehicle marketing manager.

"Customers for this vehicle demand a high level of amenities for safety and security, comfort and convenience, as well as performance," says Scarpello. "The SVT Lightning is driven for enjoyment and excitement, and we equip it according to our customers' desires."

The 2001 SVT Lightning's standard equipment inventory includes a premium electronic AM/FM stereo radio and remote, six-disc CD changer; the Power Equipment Group that includes dual electric remote control outside mirrors, power side windows and power door locks; an overhead console with compass and temperature gauge; air-conditioning with manual control; cruise control; floor mats; a dark-tinted, sliding rear window; remote keyless illuminated entry; and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with thick-section rim for a purposeful driving grip.

SVT Lightning's standard Class III towing package includes a seven-pin trailer wiring harness and Class III, frame-mounted hitch.

To protect this valuable vehicle, SVT includes the Ford SecuriLock™ passive anti-theft system. Every SVT Lightning ignition key carries a radio transponder with a unique code selected from a potential store of an astonishing 72 million billion combinations. An antenna in the steering column scans the key for its code, then transmits it to a control module where it is compared to the code stored there. If the codes match, the engine's EEC-V computer system enables the engine to run. If codes do not match or if no encoded key is detected, the EEC-V does not allow the engine to start.

Options on the SVT Lightning are limited to a factory-installed, black soft tonneau cover for the pickup box.

Environment

LOW EMISSION VEHICLE CERTIFICATION

The 2001 Ford SVT F-150 Lightning is certified as a Low Emission Vehicle, joining all other Ford F-Series pickups under 8,500 lb. GVW, which met federal LEV standards for the 2000 model year.

The Environmental Protection Agency defines a LEV as one that emits 50 percent less smog-forming emissions into the atmosphere than the current Tier 1 government standard.

SVT engineers achieved these reductions with changes in the Lightning's engine management strategy, and with Ford's advanced catalytic converter technology.

Although most pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles are not required to meet federal LEV standards until 2004, Ford began early adoption actions in 1999, when all its SUVs and the Windstar minivan were certified as LEV. The Windstar minivan has since become an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV). F-Series pickups were added to the LEV fleet in 2000. For 2001, SVT Lightning and all Ranger models also become LEV.

Ford now has more than two million LEV trucks on the roads in North America which will cut smog-forming emissions by more than 4,200 tons annually.
