Boost trivia

Anyone catch the Gale Banks interview on Speed the other night? Through all their extensive testing with superchargers and turbos they cam up with a common denominator.

1 pound of boost = a 7% gain in H/P

Every 10 degree cooler on the intake temp = 1% gain in H/P

Of course that is a general guide but interesting none the less.

Now back to your regularly schedule event.

yea i saw it, cool interview. i like Gale Banks, he is the type guy who tells it like it is whether you like it or not. just a straight up guy. i also liked his comment about NOS and how you should be a man get some real HP by using a supercharger or turbo instead of being a pansy and having to use NOS to be fast for 20secs.

The problem is whenever you add boost to an L is also raises the IAT2 temps....we never get our 7% if that is in fact a solid figure...

Just for the record, he said you get a 7% hp gain for every 1 pound of unheated boost.

1 atmosphere = about 14 PSI

2 atmospheres = 100% more airflow = 100% more horsepower = about 28 PSI (14 PSIG)

1/14 = 7.14% increase per perfectly compressed pound of boost.

Note: even perfectly efficient compression increases heat, so 7% is not possible. And our blowers are pretty damn far from perfectly efficient.

OTOH, there are dynamic effects not accounted for just using gas laws. You can get more than 7% power per PSIG with very small amounts of boost. This appears to be because you are fundamentally changing the way that the engine operates from sucking to just opening up and swallowing.

You can.

Hint: Blowers are belt-driven.
