Post Excessive tire wear on _outer_ edge

Why would this happen? Too much toe-out when making a turn?

I see that most people who are complaining about premature tire wear are having problems with the inner tread wearing too quickly. Mine is the opposite...outer tread on the passenger side tires (they've been rotated once, so its on the front and rear now). I know it must have something to do with the front-end, but I've had the truck aligned recently...although it may have been too late by then.

Just wondering why I'm getting wear on the outside...and its ONLY the passenger side. Driver's side looks good...although I'm just going to replace all 4 b/c they have enough wear on all of them it wouldn't be worth it to try and keep running the 2 driver's side ones.

Wes,

Usually it's the driver's side outer edge (at least around here) as a result of taking off-ramps fast as they are right hand turns.

Since you said it's on the passenger side, (unless you have off-ramps with left hand turns) it can only be two things: incorrect toe, or an incorrect camber adjustment on the passenger side. Usually, incorrect toe will affect both sides and you'll have a feathering condition on both tires.

Incorrect camber on one wheel will do just that - affect that wheel with wear on the inside or outside of the tread. Believe it or not, after getting the cam bolts for the upper A-arms and an alignment by Ford, I adjusted mine with a tape measure and a four foot level on the tires for camber and "feel" for caster, because my "professional" alignment was off. I suppose if the caster was really wacked, that could do it to, but it would pull badly. After 6,000 miles, my tires are perfect and it handles beautifully.

Thanks Jim,

I have a feeling it must've been wrong from the factory, as I only have checked the alignment once and that was after I lowered the vehicle about 2500 miles ago. So, it was probably too late at nearly 10k miles of wear.

The guy who does my alignments is very good and considerate and does all my cars, and he will tell me factory spec setting, his preferred settings, and do whatever I want.

Guess I'll have it done after I receive my new tires shortly.

Wes,

If you don't mind me asking, who does your alignments? I'm always on the lookout for dependable people.

Thanks,
James

I use NTB in Plano...up on 75 just north of 15th street...west side of highway.

The guy who is good...I believe his name is Mike (not 100% sure). Short (that's hard to say when I'm 5'6"), hispanic guy with glasses...takes pride in his work, IMHO.

He's done my Cobra, my LX, and my L. I'm satisfied with how I've been treated there.

Thanks!

Maybe we could hook up sometime and talk Fords. I live right near 75 & BeltLine in Richardson.

Wink

Usually caused by to much weight in the back of the truck and front end rides high, "you might want to empty that bed once in a while." Throw away all those old Mustang parts, or slide them to the other side of the bed so the driver front will wear the same.

Wes,
After 2 alignments, the passenger front tire is wearing very thin on the inside of ours..
It looks like Ford is going to replace the tire under warranty (fingers crossed) and she has 11,000 miles now.

I was just speaking w/my Brother about alignment the other day. On his truck (Chevy) he was having outer tire wear and when he took it in for alignment it was right on the spec. He adjusted his camber on his own and then he has eliminated the tire wear problem completely. I think here is the deal--the manufacturer sets up a certain spec, well there are alot of variables that may make one vehicle have good tire wear and another vehicle that is the same to have wear problems even though both vehicles may have been aligned to the same spec. The alignment spec should be a nominal alignment position, if you will, and then you can make fine tune adjustments based on your tire wear. I know this does not sound precise, but if done with care and monitoring of the tire wear before and after fine tuning, I believe an optimum setting may be reached that is not right at spec.

Just this morning or yesterday I saw a headline that Ford was going to start covering tires on their 3 year /36,000 mile
Bumper to Bumper warranty. Could have swore I saw it on blueovalnews but it is not there now. I did not read the story, just saw the headline, so I do not know what if any restrictions and / or vehicles were covered and when it would actually start.

Knew I was not crazy, the story is back up on blueovalnews now at:

http://www.bonforums.com/tire_warrantyextended.htm

Basically tires are covered from defects, wear will be prorated, started Jan 1 for all 2001 vehicles and beyond.
Lincoln's get the 50,000 mile 4 year warranty all others get the 36,000 3 year warranty.

Rex

Searched a couple of other industry news sites and also came up empty. But I know I saw the story somewhere.

Mine was within Ford's specs but neither I nor my truck liked it. The truck handled wierd and was wearing the tires. I kept an eye on my treadwear and adjusted the camber about 3 different times with the 4-foot level on a perfectly level driveway. I now know where it needs to be set from now on. Money and aggravation saved and a perfectly lined up truck. It's really easy once you understand the concept. I align all my cars. Takes minutes, literally.
