Catastrophe Defined

Well, I found out what was wrong with the truck.

"Christine" was FORCE FED an entire Serpentine belt
THROUGH the front engine cover !!! < Yikes > Then
into the oil pan, and then up into the upper engine block
until it just imploded. Everything above the short block
is toast.

This was from a catastrophic failure of the Serpentine Belt
Tensioner unlike what anybody that has seen it has
ever seen before. PMF replaced the failed part the day
before the final failure but they didn't see the damaged front
cover and that was the root cause of the lock up.

Now let me say, that Lee Beall and all the mechanics
over there have always treated me well, and there
shouldn't be ANY bashing on this thread. I just hope
we can see eye to eye and PMF rebuild the engine.

I am posting this because of all the "My xxx is making a
weird sound, and nobody can find out why!" threads that
pop up around here. The original diagnosis was a water pump.
And that was with a stethoscope. So please examine
the tensioner if you hear a noise, guys and gals ... It could
save your engine.

We are awaiting the resolution of a claim against the insurance
company of Paul Miller Ford, so I don't want to say anything
else. Ford did look at it and disavowed any responsibility whatsoever.

This part failed with 80K on the truck, so you should probably check
yours out if you have that much mileage, or more.

Cliff

PS ... Thanks to Greg, Ken, and the guys at Modular Depot for all the
quick work on this ... I hope to have her rebuilt by June !!!

Wow, that's like one of those one in a million failures eh? Who would have thought that a possible way to lose the block.

Hope the rebuild goes well Cliff!

Jesus H. And I thought my Honda Blackbird ingesting a crow through one of the ramscoops was the paramount of ironic, bizarre circumstance. Almost makes me want to replace the front cover with titanium!

What was the exact failure mode of the tensioner?
