Post Changing Plugs...

How long does it take and how hard is it to change plugs on a L? I'm going to get one this spring and was just curious.

Does "an eternity" and "like dying a slow death" adequately describe it? Anybody else have a better perspective? My experience, both with motorcycles and cars, says that any part you can't see clearly while in place is going to be "not a whole lot of fun" to work on.

ditto, and if you change them take it from someone who has had four different kinds in there L and go with splitfires the first time.i would not run splitfires in any of my other vehicles or toys but the L motor seems to respond with them, unlike the other three plugs.12.926 107.74

I still have a 1/4 swivel laying somewhere.
Make sure you have about 3-4 extensions and swivels both 1/4 and 3/8, a short set of metric 1/4 sockets and either a spark plug socket that holds the plug or a magnet rod and oh yea, about 3 hours of time on a cool engine.
When your done you can be a member of the Scarred Hands Three Hour Club.

I also thought splitfires were a crock, but for some reason they work well on the "L". "IB" was right, and thanks for the trial and error, because as the rest have stated, this is not something you can change on a whim to see which one feels better. my change on my v-10 with 10x the mods under hood, also with coil packs , is a 15 to 20 minute job.

MRBBQMAN,

Welcome aboard. ibfast and I have been preaching the gospel about splitfires in the gen2 L but it's fallen on deaf ears. It's not going to speed you up but the throttle response is noticeable. They burn much better than the stock platinum plugs. Just be ready to break your tires loose easier than before.

mrbbqman, thanks for the backup but the credit for this belongs to ltnbolt as he posted the response from the splitfires first.i was looking for my fourth different plug as the tourqemasters made my truck misfire and run like crap.i would never have tried the splits until i read his posts that the splits had better throttle response and that he pulled them a few times to see how they were burning ect,and my results were exactly the same as his. later

Bulldog,

ibfast was the guinea pig in the sparkplug test. We now need a guinea pig to see if the splits work with spray. I don't know of anybody that's tried it. Everybody just assumed they wouldn't work well (you know what they say when you assume). Start out by running one plug on the passenger side front (easy to change). That is what I did when I first started testing these plugs. Gap it small say around .040" for the spray and see what you get. It can't be any worse than those burned up plugs we saw on NLOC. Hit it one shot then park it to cool and see what it looks like.

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like a PITA. My Cobra only takes about 20-30 mins to change! I still can't believe that Ford uses platinum plugs on SVT vehicles. Platinum is no good for hi-po vehicles, they only use 'em cause they are supposed to last longer and then they can say "100,000 miles before the first scheduled tune up". That is a crock too, cause there's no way plugs and wires last that long (I know, no wires on the L... hehehe), I wouldn't go 50,000 without changing the plugs/wires, after about 30,000 it feels like a new engine when you change 'em out, I can't imagine what they would be like after 100,000 miles.

LTNBOLT and ibfast
just wanted you guys to know that your preaching about the SplitFires didnt fall on deaf ears. I was listening and my truck runs better because of it. So far I have installed the motorcraft 12FM1, the TR-6 NGKs,and the SF10-B Splitfires. The Splits are staying in the truck. I also bought the torquemasters but they are sitting on the shelf for now.
Thanks
Dale
