Wink What about the BMW M5?

Has anyone gone up agaist the M5? Are these cars really that FAST? See post from M5 site.

From the M5 message board: http://www.bmwm5.com/ubb/Forum5/HTML/000073.html

A friend of mine finally persuaded me to show up at the local street races. I didn't plan on racing, I mainly wanted to see the 996TT and 550M that had been showing up the last couple weeks. Didn't take long for my will power to wear thin...

The first and most memorable race was against an LS1 T/A with basic bolt-ons. Prior to this race my friend thought it would be funny to load up my beast with 3 passengers and dust a few rice rockets. When we lined up at the start, a T/A pulled up instead. Before I could say "hey, this isn't fair" the guys in the car started talking trash for me, and before I knew it I was about to race this LS1 with a car full of people. I lauched at 1000rpm and shut it down partway through 4th gear, he was toast. The guys start shouting and laughing, and when I got back to the start everyone (about 100 cars tonight) was yelling and cheering. The guys I was with were busy high fiving and so forth.

After everthing calmed down the same 3 guys hopped back in and we lined up at thestart for some more action. Next car to eat M5 dust was a modded AWD Eclipse...was supposed to be fast. I put so much damn distance on him by the end of 2nd gear that he let off and gave up...I hate that, as if he saved any face by not giving it a full run. With AWD he couldn't complain about a bad launch, oh well. That was my last dead-stop drag race.

The next series of kills (I seriously lost count) were against C5 and C4 vettes with various bolt-on mods at highway speeds. By the way, I had 2 passengers for the rest of the night/morning. Guys, I stomped some serious ***...and these are all seasoned street racers, they know what they're doing. Punch after punch, NOBODY could hold off the beast.

The most memorable highway punch was when a millennium yellow C5 gunned it from 6 cars ahead of me. At that moment I had just shifted into 3rd gear and was going a bit less than 70MPH. By the time my speedo showed 160, I had him by two full cars.

I must say that all those vette guys were great sports, and every time we made a pitstop I kept hearing them saying "...that's the fastest damn 4-door..." as they stepped out of their cars. None were bitter and all were in utter amazement of what they repeatedly witnessed. A great group of guys.

I think these events might have turned my Lemans blue beast into a street race legend overnight.
Oh, almost forgot to tell you all about my one and only "loss". One of the C4's I had previously ran with got fed up with the ///M dominance and decided it needed to be tamed. He released 1/3 of his NOS bottle (150-shot)leaving me and everyone else in our caravan hopelessly behind and choking on laughing gas vapors. That was sick. It made me feel like I was driving a 4 cylinder.

Incidentally, I never saw the Turbo or the 550...they left before I arrived (I got there late due to an emergency car wash).

Next time I'll try to prove the beast against a host Vipers. Wish me luck! (I'll need LOTS of it)
*Note to Corvette Forum members* Before you start calling this BS, I urge you to chat with your Dallas board members, some were present and will verify.

Yes, this is a damned fast car. Stock for stock faster than a Lightning, but with more power, less weight, and better aerodynamics it should be. Road & Track says 0-60 in 5.0, 1/4 in 13.4. Motor Trend says 0-60 in 4.7, 1/4 in 13.2. See http://www.autoworldweekly.com/roadt...nstanceid=1816
So before you take on one of these bad boys you better have put some mods on your L. so that you are close to 13.0 or better, and even then don't try any high speed roll ons, the aerodynamics will kill you.

Hey Geo...At 75k I could have two "L"s and 10k left for mods. For that much money I bet I could kick a lot of ***... twice.

Cool

Just the facts, maam, er, Kevin, just the facts. Not trying to put the L. down at all. If I had 75K lying around I'd never spend it on a car, I'd buy a boat- uh, come to think of it, I did. I'm just suggesting that you need a few mods before taking on that beemer, but for less than half the price you can have a truck that will wax it in the 1/4 and still tow your boat. I'll take the combo I have, L. and boat, over ANY car you can name, hands down.

The M5 will fly but i think the supercharged 540 is the way to go because the M5 only comes in a 6 speed. MY dad has a 99 540i it ran 14.3 bone stock 1.93 60ft. i kicked with him the other day i spun the tires just a little and couldn't catch him by the next red light. The first mod we are going to do is a gear change they say for 1500 you can pick up .6 that puts us at 13.70 for only 53,000

That's cool that the blower is under warranty. I did not realize that. Why will the auto be better than the 6-spd? More reliable? Does the 6-spd not hook at all in lower gears?

I know autos are better in faster vehicles due to torque multiplication advantages, but in a 12-sec car, seems to me the stick would be quicker. Just curious is all...

Just a random data point: the differece between a 5-sp M3 and an auto M3 (latest gen) is exactly 1 second in the quarter mile. Both stock, me driving both, torque braking the snot out of the auto...

Can I assume the 5-spd was faster? I know most of the '97-99 M3s with the 5-spd ran 14.0s or so. I can't imagine the auto being close to that.

the old man doesn't like to shift and its his daily driver. I would also assume the stick is faster but it maybe like the ls1 the autos win most of the time

Correct: As I recall the 5-sp got a 13.87... auto got 14.88. Wife had an auto (she has a bum left knee).

How much is the supercharger supposed to help the 540i? My guess is that with a high CR engine to start with, you will be limited in the amount of boost you can run. Gear change and a blower and it might run high-12s. __might__

Granted the M5 is $70k+, but this would be more reliable than a blown 540i, even if total cost of that with blower was ~$58k.

To the rest of the group,

Sorry folks, but we're comparing a truck to a very fine luxury sport sedan. If you're not impressed with a 4000+lb sedan that runs low-13s, high-12s bone stock...oh well. And don't play the "cost card". When you line up it honestly doesn't matter how much someone has spent. That's an excuse for losers.

Then again, we're talking about a completely different class of vehicles. I don't mean class as in one is a better class than another, per se (although I'd argue the BMW is a higher class vehicle than a Ford). I mean luxo-sport vs. sport truck.

If I have the money when the time comes in a couple of years, I am going to consider the new M3. Awesome vehicle and it is a bit faster than the M5.

The great thing about the blower is that it is under warranty so reliability is not an issue the cost is 13,000 for the blower but then you have an auto that will smoke a M5. The gears and blower runs in the 12's and tops out at a reported 195

Personally, I like the six speed. The m5 pulls like no other car I've driven. you just keep going and going. It keeps pulling hard at high speeds. You can go from 100 to 160 in no time and it feels as if you were in first or second, not fifth and sixth.

Not that M5s aren't fast as hell, but I saw this over on the LS1 board. They won't let you post a link to a specific thread, so bear with me.
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">NOSty: He's talking a lot of noise...sying he beat a LS1 TA from a dead stop, even with his 3 passengers.

Ws6Luvr: it may be Nick Ghetti (TrahnZam) he posted about racing and beating the living hell outta a m5, and i am 110% sure nick would *** RAPE a m5. He has a b1 cam (I believe) EVERY bolt on (including G-Hann LT headers) and a 100 shot. Maybe him, maybe not, but that's the only m5 killi have read about in the last week.

TrahnZam WS6: IT WAS ME LOL! I whupped a silver M5 bad, if he thinks he won let me know and I will meet him anytime and put lengths on him again!!! LMAO

It sounds to me like both of these guys are talking about the same race. Glad to see they both won. If only other boards could be as cool as this one...
