taking my heads off HELP!!!!!!
Last night I started ripping apart my truck with my buudy. The plan is when we go to put the new exhaust on the truck where going to get the heads ported and polished (he said might as well since the manifolds are going to be off). I haven't gotten that far yet but when I do is there any thing I need to worry about. Will I be able to take the heads off with out dropping the motor. I don't know and he has never work on a L, so I just want to make sure before I get stranded.

RTKILLA,
I've looked at the engine illustrations for the Lightning at work to see if you would have a problem pulling them. I don't have a lightning to look at, but you might have a tough time getting to the two studs holding the heater tube asy on the passenger side or right head! The studs are a M10 X 1.5 - M6 X 54.3 stud. When you take the studs out don't pull the heater tube asy. you could run the risk of damaging the insert the tube slides over.
That should be the only hang up if you didn't know they were there! Also, do you know how to index your cams? If not, make sure you mark the cam sprocket with a chain link. Don't rotate the crank at anytime. Their is a way you are to remove and re-install the front cover. If you need torque specs and torque sequence info-let me know. I have them. If you don't know how the front cover is to be removed, it has to be rotated at a certain angle to go on or off. You are not to install it going at it strait on. If you're not certain. just post I'll get the info to you. Best of luck!!

Unless you've had a 5.4 cylinder head off I'd leave it alone. I've pulled the cylinder heads off of a 5.4 and it's no fun. You can get them off with out pulling the cab easily by pulling up the head bolts and secure them with a rubber band. But with out a cam shaft retainer tool on hand you would have to resort to a pair of vise grips to hold the cam in position which isn't very professional but will work, and make sure you get the links on the chain right when you go to put things back together they don't have a clearance so if your off you'll find out in the first few minutes of start up the hard way. Also remember you'll need new everything like head gaskets, and I'd replace the torque to yield bolts, ect. Like I said if you have'nt done this before "DONT" Hope this helps.
