Bone stock for not much longer, I know humbly admit you guys were right.
mracer,
I too was torn between different chips to buy and like you i was most interested in street performance. i settled on Mike's R9 single program chip and have been most pleased. i was able to notice a big difference in my performance as soon as i put it on. the shifts were alot firmer and it quickened up quite a bit. i am going to get an air raid kit as well in the next couple of weeks. as others have suggested and go from there. before i go much further though, i have to wait and to see if they will be replacing my engine due to what most have said was a casting flaw on the head. it is leaking quite a bit from that area. it is in the shop now, so hopefully i will know today.
Good luck,
BEARIT

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. Lightning2strikes and Bearit (or anyone else who wants to join in), since you guys have the two chips I am looking at, can you each answer these questions for me? (If possible, I know I am asking alot of questions)
1. mph and rpm for WOT 1-2 shift?
2. mph and rpm for WOT 2-3 shift?
3. 1-2 and 2-3 shift "feel" at WOT and part throttle (firm, soft, mushy, etc.) Will it lay rubber or scratch 1-2 or 2-3?
4. ever ping? if so under what conditions?
5. 2nd kickdown to 1st and 3rd to 2nd, at what speed?
6. Traction problems?

Mracer - Hello fellow NC L!
1. Shifts occur at 5450 rpm. Mine actually shifts about 5500 to 5600 rpm varies sometimes.
2. Kicks down to 1st gear when under 39 mph. Wow what a difference!
3. I had slight ping at top of 2nd and Drive while 1/4 mile racing. I suspect it was because of the 40* air temps that day. Otherwise no pinging whatsoever.
4. Traction problems? Can you say tire-smoke? My truck spins through 1st gear from a 5 mph roll and when it shifts will continue to spin for about 15 to 20 feet! You will have to learn to gradually apply the Pedal!
5. Johnny Lightning sells a chip but it is also a Superchip. It is similar to the R9 program but has his own customization to it. Seems to be slightly faster than the standard R9. But keep in mind he also has a shift kit and a ram-air kit. Visit his website for more info.
6. Shifts are firm but not harsh. Shifts get firmer as throttle pressure is increased. In normal driving "old egg under the foot" it shifts just as soft as factory. Put your foot in it and it shifts firmly and with authority.
Do I like my R9?
Without a doubt the best bang for the buck. Then get a Airaid or similar filter and you will go low 13's in 1/4 mile guaranteed!
Drop me an email sometime and we still need to plan a get together!
Later,
Ryan

- 2000 Red Lightning
- 13.13 @ 106.40 mph in 1/4 mile
- 8.50 @ 85.43 mph in 1/8 mile (same run)
- Superchip R9, Airaid box with S+B 10" filter
I have a psp filter kit and jl single program and really like it. I don't think the R-9 is quite as good.. the super charger really whins which I like.

Hi mracer,
If you'd like to get some detailed info on the R9 Superchip (which our sponsored Lightning won the Silver State Classic 135 mph class with, by the way!) and the JL Superchip, please feel free to give us a call, we can provide all of that information for you.
The main 2 mods to do, as others have suggested to you, is a good chip and then something to reduce the restriction in the air intake tract. We prefer the Airaid kit, as it's the best engineered kit we've seen for the Lightning, and makes the most power on the dyno, 18 hp.
Best of luck,

I have both chips for my 99. I use both since they each have their own personality in my truck, and gives some some tuning capability depending on track condidtions. You really need to talk to both Mike and Johhny about the chips. Give Mike a call, he's a great guy and very willing to help. Johnny is also very nice, and you can reach him here http://www.svtperformance.com/cgi-bi...=20&LastLogin=

Hey, I can verify what Ryan2K says about the spinning THROUGH 2nd gear w/ the R9 and AirRaid. I still laugh like some kind of idiot when I try to tell someone about it. (I still say we should have taken pictures of the black marks that day....

mracer - I have gone the same route as you - but put my money on an Alternative Automotive chip and blower case pulley - added 2psi boost, eliminated 'torque control', delayed torque converter lock-up (comes in around 60mph), added around 100 rpm to shift points, mild--very, but, this made a huge differance in street performance, mileage is the same.
