Safe Mods Without Custom Tune??
Safe Mods Without Custom Tune??
Hey guys i just ordered an LFP intake performance kit which includes an upgraded plenum and a single blade TB. I also just purchased a 90mm MAF made by Ford Racing that i found on eBay. My current mods are just a K&N highflow intake, flowmaster exhaust, and NGK TR-6 Plugs. My main concern is will it be safe to install all of these mods without having a custom tune? I am running short on cash because i had to buy a few suspension parts as well, so should i wait until i have the money to do a complete tune or will i be fine for awhile....
Also i see alot of people mention upgraded Fuel Pumps and injectors and so on...what other mods will do me good without going overboard? This truck is my daily driver and i currently have around 25k miles. I want a nice high performance ride that i can take to the track for fun, but still be able to drive back and forth from work without having to make daily trips to the gas station.
thanks for reading guys

If we're talking about a stock Pullied Lightning then to tell you the truth I think your going about it the wrong way. Exhaust Mods on a Stock L should be looked at as a sound system ONLY, there will be no performance gain.
Also dont expect anything from the TB (although you will feel more response)
And of course Suspension aint making you no faster
A good Intake YES you will feel, but everything else you listed are simply part of the puzzle but will do nothing for your ET on a stock L. If you currently have a 80MM Maf YOU CAN NOT INSTALL THE 90MM WITHOUT A TUNE
Since you already had TR6's, I would have just thrown a Filter and 4lb Pulley on it, that you will see a BIG increase in ET and fun on the street. Some drive them a while with 4lb Pulleys without a tune, although I wouldnt recommend it there is plenty doing it so I guess it's safe enough.....
(if your stock boost you dont need Pumps and Injectors "yet")
you will need them at @ 450 RWHP

great advise man, The next step i am going to take is doing upper and lower pulleys, then custom tune...i guess ill wait to install the MAF until then. Yeah i know the suspension doesnt help me in performance but my ball joints where bad and i had a blown front shock so i sprung for a complete ground force lowering kit and some new DJM upper and lower control arms that came with pre-installed ball joints.
Any other advise guys for affordable perf mods?

Leaving the factory tune in is about 11 degrees timing at WOT, and you are leaving a decent amount of power on the table. No advantage to avoiding changing putting in a better tune. As soon as you race another truck with your same mods and a better tune, you will get smoked. Having said that, get a Predator, use the pulley tune which is generally safe/rich, and put 16 degrees timing in it. Plus, with the Predator, you can put your factory tune back in anytime in 3 minutes. The rest of the mods, I agree with Rob.
amen to what guys above have already said. If I were in your shoes, my mod list would have been (in addition to what you already have):
1. lower pulley (4# or #6)
2. dyno/tune (via chip or handheld)
3. FTVB
The SBTB and plenum do not bring much to the table at this point.

Jesse, The 2400 SCT is an upgraded MAF I think good through 650HP so it's an upgrade over the OEM piece
but to my knowledge you'll need to tune for and Sal an Rob are correct, a cat back gets you nothing but volume and the throttle body add a few HP and a bit better throttle response, do a tuner and 4lb lower, great bang for the buck, as for which brand call Sal, JDM, LFP or JL they al can hook you up.
