Post What is the "Soft Cup" holder?

My cup holder in my 2000 Lightning has a space to the left with some sort of lid and a label that says "soft cups only."

What is a "soft cup?"

Weird.

Thumbs up

styrofoam, paper, light plastic (like those red and blue "party" cups), etc.

No "hard" cups (coffee mugs, glass cups, pint glasses, etc) because of the risk of them shooting out and hitting you in the event of an accident. Just one more instance of how far companies have to go to avoid a "hot coffee in the crotch" McDonald's lawsuit.

Howardje,
I think that is for like styrofoam coffee cups. You can take it out if you seldom drink out of those kind of cups.

By the way, I see you have a Z06, my wife is wanting one so I am looking for one maybe for 2002. How do you like it? It would be crazy of me to ask IF it is fast, so I will ask HOW fast it is. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. I just wonder why there is a lid? Oh well, who cares anyway.

SVT-Snake

I had a 99 coupe before I bought the Z06 and there is a significant difference between the two. However, the majority of the upgrades will only be noticed on the race track, with the exception of straight acceleration.

The shocks are set perfectly, the stronger rear spring allows the power to be planted much better, the wider rims and tires allow for faster speed through turns and the brake ducts resist overheating better.

The new transmission is IMHO the single biggest improvement. The lower gearing provides for a big gain in acceleration.

If you don't race on road courses, then most of these improvements won't matter. If you just drive on the street and want a fast car you are better off changing the gears yourself and adding an intake to improve the acceleration enough to match the Z06 in a straight line. Just don't expect to keep up on a road course.

So, it depends on your goals.

BTW, I love it!

The lid is the ashtray. Pull it out. The reason for the soft cups warning is because the risk of the airbags turning a hard cup into shrapnel.

Cool

Silver 2000 is right it's an ashtray (an extra on other models). Unless you smoke loose it and take the cupholder space.

Howardje, where do you road race your Vette? Any place near Washington DC? Do you think they would allow Lightnings?

Redlite,

Primarily, I compete in SCCA Solo 2 competitions (AKA Autocross) and Lightnings are always welcome at any autocross.

I am also getting started in running at Summit Point which is about 1 1/2 hours West of D.C. I haven't participated in a true "fender rubbing" race there, but I have competed in time trials there. Its a hoot!

There's no reason a Lightning couldn't run there. In fact, on Thanksgiving weekend during the Turkey Bowl, I was going to take a lap on the main circuit in my Lightning but I didn't make it before the shut the track down. They invited me to come back the next day to run it but I didn't make it out.

Here are a few websites if you are interested:
http://www.autocrossers.org http://solo.wdcr-scca.org http://www.nasaracing.net/ http://www.autocrossersinc.org http://www.vmsc.org/

VMSC is hosting an autocross this weekend at Virginia Motorsport Park and NASA is hosting one next weekend at the same place. I'm sure that you'd have no problem getting into the autocross at this time of year.

Sadly, my Vette is in the shop this weekend. Maybe I'll take the Lightning to VMP this weekend. Oh yeah, I put snow tires on yesterday. That won't work.

See ya!

Howardje, thanks for the info. Maybe if I get my nerve up, I will try some racing.

By the way, you may have read some of the posts concerning road racing a Lightning and the problems with brake fade. A friend of mine at work, who is probably going to buy a 2001 Lightning, says the reason for the rather odd looking wheels on the 2001 is to allow for larger brake caliphers and hopefully improved pads. Thats the scuttlebutt. Be interesting if it turns out to be true.

I wonder how much "fender rubbing" there would be on the track if you where racing your Lightning? Hehe.
