2001Cobra! Contender for the H/W Belt of SVE?
For those of you that have been wondering if the 2001 cobra is going to be a contender to the "HEAVY WEIGHT BELT". Nope!!
(No British Pun intended,he,he)
Same for the new special edition Bullit. By the way! Didn't spell it wrong. The Bullit emblem is spelled that way!! The Cobra will be a contender for the Screaming chicken otherwise known as the Fire Bird and the comaro SS.
The Bullit will be faster than the GT, not the Cobra. With a few MODS THE Cobra will give a stock lightning a run for it's money.
So with that said, you can all go to sleep knowing you will still hold the Belt for 2001 CY.
ps. Cobra "R" doesn't count! Only rich, snoby collectors own the majority of them and they don't know how to drive with a clutch! he!he!he!

A member here has an article on his website that rates the speed of production cars in North America. If I remember correctly the new Lightning came in at 13th and the new Cobra was 10th. I don't remember the exact quartermile times but the L pulled something like a 13.60 compared to the Cobra's 13.4...and all vehicles were bone stock. I was shocked at the Cobra's timeslip but then I just assumed it was a 2001. Anyone know what article I'm referring to? Does someone know which member has this on his site?

Hey guys,
I know where your coming from! try this senario out and tell me what you think. Car and driver and other magazines want the First test with the automaker that's is getting ready to release their latest updated Hot Rod.
So the automaker donates a car. It does great in the articles, but once to the public, People start to complain about lack of power.
98 cobras are faster, the cars in the article that were slower are a race. People are going to the dyno's with MODS, finding out they are at the HP the automaker is advertising!
Then a letter goes out to the owners about the issue. They are instructed to take it to the dealer to update the upper intake, exhaust and a Flash update.
I have friends that have both and the lightning won almost every race. Street I might add!! Saturday nights on Tellegraph here in Dearborn. Note the people that went to the track had Pleanty of complaints also!
Were talking mature men with racing experienc shifting the cobra and still loosing. The 2001 Lightning will have 20Hp and 40 ft.lbs of torque more than last year as you all well know.
The truck will be slightly lighter than the 99.5-2000 L's. Now you have to ask yourself one question! How do you know the lightning wasn't realy the fastest out the barn door at SVE?
How many of you guys out there have beat 99 Cobras? Since you had your "L"?

Wasn't the Cobra R they one that was tested and came in #11? I don't beleive it was the regular production model (of which there was none for 2000).

The Popular Mechanics article is from July '99 for a contest conducted in March '99. Mustang was regular Cobra.
Also, the last specs I saw on the 2001 Lightning is 380HP and 450lb of torque. Have not heard of a bump from 440lb to 480lb. Is this new news, or just a mistake some place?

All that matters is what you witness at the track. I take the magazine times with a grain of salt. That Pop Mechanics test must've been done on a great day at a well-prepped track. Some of those cars ran significantly faster than they normally do...maybe they were hot-rodded a bit from the factory...I don't know.
But down here near Dallas, TX in the summer heat, my bone stock '96 Cobra ran 13.8 @ 102.xxmph. My bone stock '99 L ran 13.95 @ 99mph. I've seen a couple of stockers run 13.8x. I've yet to see a bone stock one at the Texas Motorplex break 100mph trap speed.
The fact is that the '99 Cobra was slower than the '96-98 Cobra...until it had the "fix" performed. After this, I've seen several others (with nothing else done to them) run 13.4-13.5/104-105mph. Now, there may be some guys back in the northeast with awesome air turning times like this out of a bone stock L, but I'm talking same track/same day. This is the ONLY way to compare vehicles.
That being said, if it were an 1/8 mile race, the L would win no matter what. I do not see a Cobra being able to turn as good of 1/8 mile ET's as the L. I'm a decent driver, and I know mine couldn't when it was stock. Heck, right now it would be a heads-up race in the 1/4 b/w my slightly modded Cobra and slightly modded L...til I turn on the laughing gas in the Cobra.
As far as the '01 truck...if its lighter and indeed has more power (and can put it to the ground) then it should run mid-13s or better out of the box down here in TX. I wouldn't hold my breath on the '01 Cobra even making it off the production line, FWIW.

All I got to say is that On that list the only vehicle that can haul some plywood and trailers and still go to the track and whoop a$$ is our L's. I think thats pretty damn impressive for 5000 pound truck

redlite,
20 additional hp=280 for 2001
30-40 additional on the torque around 470-480. Got around about numbers not exact! Those were the numbers that they were hinting at!
WA 2 FST,
They have already built a series of 2001 Cobras for Development. I walk by them everyday! I wouldn't be telling you this if it weren't for a high up ford person already hinting the spring release of the 2001 Cobra and the Bullit on another board. Also mentioned by a Ford rep at SEMA show in Las Vegas. Just a matter of time. They may make some changes at the end! Rightnow it's a go!

Thor01,
Thanks for the info. I really do hope Ford will get the Cobra right. '99 was at the very least a marketing disaster with the power problems they had off the showroom floor, and of course '00 was basically non-existent. There is no reason Ford cannot build a 350hp Cobra. I don't know what the '01 is supposed to be rated at, but 320 or whatever isn't going to cut it nowdays.

WA 2 FST,
It would make you cry if I told you the hp rating!!! I can't say more then that! You know what I mean? I agree Ford needs to stop being so conservative. They need a production car to kick the crap out of the vett! Cost,Lawsuit's and liability is the problem!!!

Well, I know if they would build a Cobra R or the FR500 and price it in the mid-40s, I'd buy one. I think there would be a lot of buyers. I would like a radio, leather seats, and some sound-proofing...so it would have to be a bit more refined inside than the Cobra R.
Fact is, Ford said for a LONG time that "you can't put the 5.4 DOHC in a Mustang", and then they turned around and did it.
For 4 years now, 4.6 DOHC owners have been begging Ford to give us some aftermarket parts. Right now there's nothing worth spitting on from Ford. They make this committment to the mod motor and then do nothing.
Sorry for venting.

WAY 2 FST,
It kills me everytime I walk throught the experimental garage and see some awesome engines under the hoods of the Cobras and GT'S. Then I get ticked when they don't release it or offer it for aftermarket.
The COBRA JET S/C is one! It's a 99 Cobra painted Ferrari Blue with a Lightning engine and a Tremic 6spd behind it. They cant keep the wheels under it through third!! Vett Killer for sure.
No cutting the sheetmetal to put it in. Minor eng-mount mods. The S/charger is an eaton. Air is fed into the back like the ones on the T-Bird supercoops. This car was at a show and was in a mustang Magazine.
So it's not confidential. Roush made the hood to wrap around the s/charger. Cool looking, but heavy. I was at the Roush 21 building today where they do the Cobras,GT'S and trucks for the Ford dealers. The new Roush cars and trucks look awesome. New rear wings, front spoiler. Chrome wheels and graphics,Seats look good! I'll be taking in my lightning to have them put their spring kit on it. Like BABOLTS! Later!
