Not L...what would a 93 LX 5.0 Convertible run???
Everyone,
My cousin has been getting interested in racing since making a trip to the track with me.
He couldn't believe that a truck outruns a mustang (Read...he is a diehard mustang man). Anyway, he says that his 93 LX convertible 5.0 would put some very good(low 13's) times down at the track.
I will admit that I am far from a diehard mustang man, so I am wondering what those more experienced think???
The car is basically stock, 100K miles on original engine and flowmasters.
As always, thanks

Depends on the gears could be 2.73, 3.08, or 3.27 depending on tranny. If its an auto I can't see him going any better than low 15's. If its a 5 spd w/the 3.08's maybe 14.4. Just my .02 I've had several 5.0's

the fastest of the 5.0s was the lx notchback, also referred to as the coupe or sedan. these cars came in lots of different trim, but there were some rare late 80s models with 4 cyl interiors (lighter, skinnier seats) and no A/C. these cars ran low 14 stock from the factory with the stock WEAK 2:73s or 3:37s... your friends lx vert is probably aod....expect no better than mid -high 15s since its now aged and a heavy vert...(the 93 cobra could run low 14s as well.)
HI!... BRIAN K : I think your cousin will be very disappointed if he actually takes his car down the 1/4 mile. If it's an auto, he's just about got the slowest version of his year MUSTANG. I agree with THEAUTOMAN in saying mid 15's for a auto and very high 14's with stick. When my truck was only running 15.30's, I could severely SPANK almost every MUSTANG convertable of that close year. I.m talking 2-5 truck lengths. Now that I'm running 14.50's (with fuel and major traction problems) I don't even waste my time with them. It definatly has potential, if he wants to spend the money and time.

checkl that gear typo.....the 5 speeds came in 2:73 or 3:08 i believe, and the aod came in 3:08 or 3:27 trims......also its of note that the AOD severly robbed the car of its torque and hp and most were low 16 second high 15 second cars....the 5 speeds were pretty fast for the times.
I had a 91 mustang LX 5.0, had a few spped parts on it, could only muster 14's with it! He will be lucky to low 15's with that thing. With the amount of miles on it, stock, AOD, & a convert all work against it!! Have fun spanking him!!!!!!

I agree with what most everyone has stated and I'll add my small bit of experience.
First, let me start by saying I'm no expert, but I currently own my 10th, 12th and 13th mustangs. My 92 LX hatchback went 14.52 BONE stock with air silencer and everything in place. That was on stock radials and some careful driving out of the hole. (5 speed, of course with the 3.08 option.)
I've yet to see an AOD car get into the 14s STOCK. When I say stock, I mean showroom stock. Consider now that it's convertible and considerably heavier than the normal old hatchback or notchback mustang.
Your cousin would have his hands full trying to outrun a stock Gen1 Lightning. My 94 went 15.02@89, stock with spray in bedliner and fiberglass bed lid.

Anyway, he says that his 93 LX convertible 5.0 would put some very good(low 13's) times down at the track.
where did he ever say it was stock? with some gears and other bolt ons this is entirely possible.....although by saying his cousin was "becoming interested" in racing, most of assumed the cousin's lx vert was stock.
Without knowing modifications, all we can do is compare stock for stock. Give me a list of modifications and I'll put up more numbers from even more experience.
Example:
My 92 went 13.30s with Motorsport shortie headers, C&L 73mm Mass air meter, K&N air filter, 3.73 gears, McCreary tires, 2 chamber flowmasters and no cats, short belt and a decent shifter.
I never had it on a dyno until it was running 11.30s, so my numbers are only track times at this point. I can even dig out the old time slips from my file box if needed.

Here are the specs I know:
5 speed
Flowmasters
I tried to educate him that "I don't think your car will run 13's.." But he swears that he knows speed and he knows that he could beat the L....Maybe its time to set up a little contest..
Anyway, IMHO, the car is in less than decent shape. I would think with 100k+ on the ticker, we would be looking at 15's.
Thanks

5-speed, Flowmasters (better start shaking in those combat boots), and 100k miles with a car that is in "less than decent shape."
Even if it has 3.08s, I predict low-15s, high-14s...the variance depends on where you race. Down here in typical conditions in north Texas, that car would run 15s for sure.
You will crush that car. Like Trace, I've been around late model Mustangs for a LONG time. That thing will be an easy win for your Lightning.

Dave,
You are correct about the HP rating Ford gives the '93-95 5.0 Mustang. However, the facts are that this indeed was just a "rating issue", and has nothing to do with hardware. A '93 will run just as strong as a '90. The '87-88 cars were speed density and bone stock were a little faster than their mass-air counterparts (notice, I said bone stock).
The '93 Cobra indeed was rated low at 235hp. I've seen several bone stock ones pull 220+ at the rear wheels.
Just a clarification. Not trying to be picky. The FACTS are that Brian K's L will absolutely crush this '93 5.0 convertible.

yes, i have read that in reality, the testing started in 1993 by ford was either more conservative or more accurate, and that the 87-92 were no different in actual hp and torque. the only difference i know of is starting in 1993, ford switched to hyperteunic (sp?) pistons. and like wes mentioned, 87-88 was the last year of speed density., which in stock form was slightly quicker than the mass air counterparts (which are more responsive to modifications). but like wes said, bottom line , stock for stock its an *** raping by the L...
--dave 93 gt
--dave 93 gt
everyone has overlooked another important factor. he said the lx is a 93, 1993 was rated at only 205 hp and less ft lbs as well, do to some last minute changes by ford, as well as revised testing standards. its debatable whether 93 was any weaker than 87-92, because the 93 svt cobra, rated at only 235 hp ran 14.00s and o-60 in sub 6 seocnds. most experts say the 93 cobra was closer to 250 hp at the flywheel. but it should be noted that the 93 gt/lx 5.0 is only rated at 205 hp, so that could also be a factor....5 speed or not, you will rape him if he is stock. brian, just go race him and put him in his place.
