Question Shifting question

Ever since I did my first and only big burnout trying to impress my friends at 4k miles, my transmission no longer has a crisp 1-2 shift like it used to. 2-3 and 3-4 were unaffected.

It's been like this now for about 3k miles. The shift point is still the same, just not crisp anymore. The chip helps some, but it's still not like it was even when stock before the burnout. In fact, compared to the other gears, 1-2 is almost mushy. Any ideas?

Hi Jim,

You may well have glazed the 1-2 clutch pack with that burnout. Or, you may just have burnt the transmission fluid, both need to be checked, but don't be surprised if it is a clutch pack.

Remove the chip & take it in to the dealership, and get this complaint on record. Hopefully you can get this taken care of under warranty, as the 4R100 should be able to stand up to a little abuse er, uh, fun.

Good luck!

Mike,

I know engines and manual transmissions really well, but automatics are uncharted territory for me.

The L truck, as a whole, may as well be a Chevy in my experience at the dealership. What really scares me is our half-breed transmissions in the hands of their mechanics. I even called SVT about this and got the standard answer, "No problems whatsoever with the 4R100's - they're bulletproof."

I suspected the clutch pack because my fluid looks great. Is there any way to "un-glaze" it? I can't believe ZorPrime can get away with what he did with no damage, and a simple burnout tears mine up. Geez!

Don't know if this helps, but I'am due for my third set of tires at 13,000 miles. Yes I rotate them. So if doing a few burnouts will damage out trans, I believe mine would be shot!

Well guys, that's encouraging to hear and what I would expect out of a factory hot-rod. Nevertheless, something has happened. I don't know the internals of an automatic. Maybe a metal particle or shaving got loose and is clogging something? What controls the 1-2 shift? Is it a separate switch/solenoid or something?

Factory-Tech - you out there somewhere?

Yeah, I'm out here, and I'm betting on the glazed clutch pack for what it's worth. Sometimes they go, it's pretty much a function of how hot you got the fluid and how long the clutch was engaged. The Forward clutch is always engaged in forward gears, the direct clutch is engaged in 3 & 4 and the OD is engaged in 4th. If it got hot enough it would glaze the fiber plates. Good news is the parts aren't that expensive, bad news is the labor is unless you can do it yourself. The Forward clutch is pretty involved, almost at the "botttom" of the box, which as it sets in your truck is the back, I work on them on spin pallets with the bell housing up, so that's why to me it would be in the bottom.
I would call this a freak accident, as for my money the 4R100 is pretty much bullet proof. You amy get a dealer to cover it warranty, but when it gets back to the plant the validation guys will pretty much know what you did to it. Figureing it IS a Lightning box, it won't be that hard to figure out, but I won't tell if you don't.

Guys,

Thanks for the replies. OK, I'm betting on the glazed clutch pack too, because that's what it acts like. Before tearing into it (and I will if it keeps it up) should I try synthetic tranny fluid first? If so, which brand do you like?
