The information i have come across regarding polishing these wheels is the metal is too rough and does not come out smooth. Also our wheels are powder coated so its not an easy process even to chrome.Polishing cannot be done

Hey Guys,
Sorry to correct anyone but the wheels are painted and yes you can strip the paint and you can polish the wheels too. I have done both. Before I chrome plated the wheels that I widened, I striped the paint and started to polish them. The chrome plater would not polish the back side of the wheel because it was to dangerous to try and get their buffing wheels in there. I did it myself and all that I can say is never again. Look at some chrome wheels sometime and you will see they are not buffed to a high sheen on the reverse side.
PS. Before an aluminum wheel is chrome plated it is buffed and polished to a high luster. Just like painting it is the surface preparation that is so important.

Question

HI!... BABOLT : I don't know if you remember me or not. But I met you at MILAN DRAGWAY last year at one of our "MILAN MEETS". You were the one that told me of a place to get LIGHTNING wheels for a VERY cheap price. I was just curious to where you got your rims widened? What do they charge per rim? I live over the border in WINDSOR, CANADA. I need to get a set of 16 inch spare tire rims widened so I can mount a set of M/T SPORTSMAN PRO's. I would like to get them widened to about 10-11 inches. I need traction!LOL! I want to see if I can get my 60FT times down.

Thanks - NEAL "THE H.P FREAK"

Question

Would someone like to tell me what would be better for things in the engine compartment, Lets say a TB, a Tube, and some other things; Would I want to Polish them or have them chromed? What is easier to keep clean? What has the best shine?

Thanks
Justen

Since this is a cast(Low Pressure) wheel, it can have a significant amount of porosity. This looks horrid when polished.

Hey SB.
I agree with you. Porosity is the bane for all cast aluminum. You can minimize it but you cannot get away from it.

Billet aluminum polishes up much better than cast.

Better yet is forged aluminum. It can be polished to a very high luster. Very close to chrome.

Well I have to be honest here. I was not looking to have my Lightning wheels polished but my 93 cobra wheels. I saw this on a car at one of the shows and it looked good with the teal. Chrome on the teal is too much. The reason I asked this board is because you guys have so much good information that I figured someone would be able to point me in the right direction.

Sorry about the little white lie

Thanks to all that have replied.

John

HI!... BABolt : Sorry, I am unable to E-MAIL you or anyone else. My E-MAIL system has been disconected because it interfears with my brother's buisness. See our computers are linked together and if I receive E-MAIL, it all comes to me instead of him. It's actually a real pain! Thanks for your quick responce though.

I had my wheels polished on my Lightning and they came out great. Can't tell the difference between the chrome caps and the wheel. No pits or anything. I polished mine because chrome chips, polish doesn't. Both need to be buffed frequently so I went with the polished look. It set me back 200 a wheel. But you must remember I live the SF bay area where EVERYTHING costs WAY TOO MUCH!
