Post 4:10 Installed, Whine on decel

I just got my 4:10’s installed but there is a whine on deceleration. The installer stated that he tried three different shims and this is the best he can do. He also stated that he called his buddy at the local Ford dealer and they stated that the 4:10’s have this problem even when installed in the Expeditions. This installer is a reputable Ford performance shop in the area. He has installed 3:73’s in three other Lightnings and stated that he had no similar problem and this is the first 4:10’s he has installed. Am I getting BS? You other 4:10 users, how does ring pinion sound, especially on deceleration? Thanks in advance for feed back.

If they are whining,There IS a problem! I dont care how reputable he is.NO gears are supposed to whine.Sometimes the installer needs to fabricate new shims.I had to have it done in the past.DO NOT SETTLE with this!

I have US Gears and there is a soft hmmm when backing off and the gear installers that I used know what they are doing and have installed 4.10's in L's many times.

The shims that I have were fabricated because you cannot get the correct shims for the 4.10's.

I used to have my own shop years ago and did many a gear change. I personaly feel no good gear set should make noise, although a tech at Richmond Gear told me otherwise once (on a set of 4.10's "they do that some times". I always had great results with Ford Motorsport gears. FMS gears had to be set up by backlash and contact patern. Other brands specified pinion depth and backlash. If your gear set has a specified pinion depth the pinion depth gauge the shop used may have been one that located off the carrier bearing cap matting surface, rather than the true center of the carrier. A proper pionion depth gauge is near impossible to find anymore. There are other things that can cause gear noise like improper assembly of the ring gear to carrier, but most likely you have a contact problem or insuficient pinion preload (on decel the pinion is drawn into the ring gear). Get it fixed right away, changing contact paterns shortens gear life.

had my 4:10's for about 8000 miles now, and they have never whined. 99SVT has the same setup and no whine. Both are US gears and are holding up pretty good. Not sure about shims, but Pile Brothers here in Houston had no problem with shimming up the ring gear or the pinion. ???????

What a bunch of crap. Gears on a passenger vehicle should not whine. The installer that did my gears works for Precision Gear and had a part in the shim kit that was being sold for the gears. When he put my gears in, he commented that the main shim was too thick and had to be ground down to make it thinner so as to get a good fit. He was glad to do my L because now a change in the shim kit can be made so as not to have to grind anything. Your gear guy apparently had neither the means or brains to modify the shim. Too bad. Take it a shop that can deal with shims needing to be modified. The pinion shim is a bit bigger around than a silver dollar and about 1/8" thick.

Thanks all for the feedback. I may be had since this installer has told me this is the best he can do! I have about 20 miles on the gears and now am worried that anyone can fix the shims to get the whine out. I may have to start all over with new gears and especially a new installer. If I can't get any help from the installer, I will stop payment on the check Monday. I am using Ford Motor Sport gears. Are there any better? Thanks again for the feedback.

Somewhat depends on which brand of gears you installed. There is no shim kit for the Precision Gears, at least with the correct spacing. The guy who installed mine had to fabricate the parts, but he does nothing but drivelines, and has a full service machine shop. No whine whatsoever. Your run of the mill mechanic will not be able to do this; you need a specialist who really knows what he is doing. And, of course there is no problem with the 3.73s, whole different animal altogether.

Talked to my installer this morning and he will try again. 1BADTK, could you give me the telephone number of Pile Brothers that you mentioned? ALAHADOGGY, I would also like the telephone number of the shop that installed your gears. Anyone else who has installed FMS 4:10's that would be willing to talk to this installer or has a shop who would be willing to talk would also be welcomed. What I am trying to do is get information from these installers with my installer so he can talk to others who have done it right. I plan to take the truck back to him Monday assuming Tropical Storm Gordon does come to New Orleans.

Cool

A direct comment on gears from my close friend with many years in the auto trade:

Who is this guy? Reputable my ***, he should have a look at the heel and toe set up. New gears never hum or do old ones set up correct. Evidently he has not build diffs for a living. Tell him to look at the meshing wih paste he'll find they are not meshing correctly. Long live Ford gears -George P.

One more problem discovered Saturday, oil dripping out of housing. 1BADTK, still would like Pile Brothers telephone number.

sorry 'bout slow response, i was out fishing. my installer is Mark Chuhaloff at Coast Driveline here in Ventura, ph. # 805-656-0285.
didn't know you were using FMS gears, i would think that they would be a snap since Ford does make the correct shims for them. leaking oil and gear whine cannot be good signs, good luck with the fix.
