important news about intercooler leak on lightings
was over at ford store last week and saw 99 lighting in the shop it had a intercooler leak, they were waiting on the new cooler for the truck, well the new cooler just arrived today the mech gave me a call and i went down to kook at the new one,it has a upgraded part number but first look it does not look any differance, we both decided to see if we could find out were the old one was leaking we put under pressure and the leak was comeing from the bottom tubes, we cleaned them off and did it again same results leaking from bottom tubes, after looking at them closer it looks like they did not have enough solder on them, so we looked at the new cooler and sure enough all the tubes looked they hqave at least trible the orignal amount.. hopefulley this will solve our leaking cooler problems.
You didn't by chance happen to get the part number of the new I/C???

The part number for the intercooler for 99-00 is the same. It has never changed and the new intercooler being used to replace leaking intercoolers has the same part number as the original.
The 2001 has a different part number.

Just got my new intercooler as well. I looked at the old one and it was a mess. Black gooo all over, most likely fried coolant. I could barely see light through the fins but I did manage to dump all the residual coolant over my shirt while I was inspecting the intercooler. I hope the extra solder solves the leak problem. By the way how much coolant did your motor wind up eating before the replacement part was installed??? I estimate my truck ate about 2 gallons of the green goo and I am worried about my cats, spark pulgs, oxygen sensor and for that matter the whole motor! Thanks.
Part of the repair is the replacement of the plugs and o2 sensors and engine oil. This should have been done to yours. If not refuse to accept the truck, you're being cheated. Cats come under the emission system warranty along with the blower and are covered for 70,000 miles not 35,000.
Well, let me ask you guys, I took my truck in to the dealer Monday for leaking intercooler. They pressure tested it and found no leak. Put the coolant tracer dye in it and told me to drive it a while. What the heck is this supposed to do? If the coolant is leaking through the i/c, how the heck is dye supposed to trace it? Are they going to put a UV lamp on the exhaust? Anyway, they did contact Jake Doff (if I had a name like that I would go to court and change it immediately) at the tech hot line and apparently did order a new intercooler. The part is on b/o, so no telling when it will be available (I hope sooner than my wheel locks, which have been on b/o since April). I hope you are right that the i/c has been beefed up. My worry is that they will just slap another one in and it will eventually fail, too, ad infinitum.

Call SVT And tellem to fax you a list of what is suppose to be replaced along with the intercooler. There is suppose to be a kit lists which includes:
intercooler
gaskets
studs,
spark plugs,
O2 sensors
engine oil (your choice)i made em put Mobil one back in mine after they'd filled it with ford oil.

ALPHADOGGIE, If your intercooler is leaking the dye will show up on the plugs, 02 sensors, and at the exhaust tips. If dye shows up this is enough evidence for them to order all the parts so you're not down for two-four weeks. My dealership did this for both Jerrod and me with no problem.
