Thumbs up Higher Voltage Cops Advantages Or Disadvantages??

I used the search forums but could not find the answer i need the aftermarket coil packs with a modded engine do they really help or do you just get a hotter burn not much pros and cons on this subject. is our oem 20.000 volts compared to excells 40.000 volts that much better thanks for any input you have then mabey i can deside if i need stronger coils.

we have never run them on any of our trucks and we put three trucks in the 9's including the fastest daily driver on stock COP's Id have to say Ive never seen the advantage of them on 99.9% of the L community

well i don't know about them giving any extra power. but i do know that when i put the granatelli's on my truck they did away with the stumble at idle that i had. so i'm happy with them, except for the fact that when i pulled them out to check my plug's, the boot's separated from the coil itself. a small issue but nothing i can't deal with.

I can't think they could hurt it. Prob will not make it much if any better.

I know JDM tunes Dealer Jims truck. He has aftermarket COPS.

That may be from just changing them out. I also find the OEM coils and ignition to be an excellent system.

hey, maybe so. i do know that when i installed a set of tr6's with the stock COP'S, i did experience a stumble at idle. i was told that the stumble was a charecteristic of the tr6's by more than one person, and, by my tuner, who was the one who recomended the tr6's. this was back when everthing was still new and fresh. but now with the granatelli's i no longer have the stumble.

i don't argue that the stock system is good, but at least doulble the voltage has got to be better. i have seen many time's before that a more intense ingnition is better. it has worked for me in the past and untill i see different i will continue use an improved ignition.

to each his own i suppose.

If you were to believe all the arguments that go back and forth about particular mods are in favor of not working, then all of our trucks really dyno at 350 RWHP; we all are liars and photoshop our trucks lifting the front ends at the track, forge dyno sheets and CGI all of the track video.

Regardless, the higher voltage COPS would provide an advantage and a noticeable difference in cases where:

1. Your installed units are either defective or malfunctioning.

This is why I love posts that say "yeah, I replaced my COPS after 105K miles with Masassferrattai COPS and WOW!" Yeah, no substitute for routine maintenance there friend.

I would like to think that the higher voltage units would work better in situations where you have high RPMs, high cylinder compression or extreme turbulence. I don't think that any of the three would apply to most of the Lightnings on the road. I'm sure Johnny L's truck would have a legitimate need for them - I think he's well up into the 1000 HP range and running 25+ lbs of boost with nitrous.

I agree 100%.

I have run 20+ psi of boost with as much as 250hp of spray on top. I NEVER had issues with my plugs firing.

If you have the money and are one of those people that must have every part available, then go for it. Like mentioned, higher voltage coils can't hurt (well, the Granatelli's have caused a lot of misfire problems for people and lots of places have stopped selling them).

One thing people don't realize, is that these things wear out. The stock coils get weak after a few years or so. Putting a fresh set in makes a world of difference.

Funny thing is.... most non-COP guys are trying to improve their plug wire/distributor setups and making tons of hp with them, and here we are trying to improve an ignition where each plug has it's own coil. Seems silly to me.

So what it comes down to is.... change them if you want, but it's not NEEDED to improve anything.

I replaced my 6 month old stock replacement packs with the Granatellis because I was blowing out the spark at the bottom of 3rd gear with 19psi of KB boost. The plugs were gapped at .028 when this was happening. The Granatellis fit like crap but they have been working flawlessly for a year now at a .032 gap and the same boost level. I'm convinced they work but who knows if my 6 month old stockers were any good to begin with?

EWW EWW WHAT ABOUT A PLASMA BOOSTER

I'd also have to agree the stockers havent failed us yet
Both Sal and Jim have built 600 - 700 + HP L's I've owned and both run perfect on a good set of stock coils. For what it's worth tlfwatch Sal and I have Dyno'd my old 02 with and without the Spark enhancing Plazma Booster a few times, and in all ocassions we either made the same "OR MORE" power without it. I know it's not the same as coils BUT it is a Spark Enhancing Ignition Mod and in my case it added nothing (although I too would swear it did smooth it out and gave great pedal response ???) but lets not get Sal started, hehehehe
I still have it if anyone wants it, 1 milllllllllllllllion dollars......

wizzin in the cherrios

You are not going to gain any hp from changing your cop. You may get a 1/2 mpg better milage and better idle quality in a colder plug. I had a stock cop go bad at 36000 miles. I chose the granatellis because #1 the stock cop spring is an f'ing joke. The grannatelli plug wire is far superior #2 I paid $325 dollars out the door. The fitment issues discussed in past threads must have been resolved because mine fit like a champ with no washer needed. If you have a high millage truck and are running an s load of boost the grans might be a good thing if you want to open the gap up a smig. p.s. i heard that the grannatelli sticker alone gives you 15 hp.

None here. The only problem I had was with the fitment. The performance has been fine.

I know Accell and MSD both have sets avaliable and regardless of the HP gain might be more cost effective than 700.00 for a set of stockers I also just saw that MSD reciently released a harness for the DIS-4's, to tie the two together and make the tie in on mod motors without hacking the OEM harness, with this said if mine tank, stockers are whats going back in.
