Exclamation History in the Making

For those of us who have the privilege of working the nite shift this election has been unreal. First Gore gets FL then it's retracted, then Bush gets FL at 02:20 as about 97% of the votes are counted. Then at around 04:00 as Gore is about to concede on camera(he had already called Bush and had to call him back) word comes out that only 500 votes seperate the 2 mandating a recount(by FL law). Now here at 05:00 the official count seperates the 2 by 224 votes with Gore winning the popular vote by a mere 60,000 votes out of an almost 100 million votes, unbelievable.

Someone posted this on the corral, and I is exactly my opinion, but worded better then I could do it:
he Founding Fathers did not like the idea of a democracy, and specifically avoided it. Why?
"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage."
-Alexander Tyler
The Founders knew that most ignorant dullards (read: the masses) will vote for goodies over freedom anyday, and that often times the majority would vote to infringe the rights of the minority. It's called the rule of law, not of men. Unfortunately, they never knew how right they were. Skip forward over 200 years, to the here and now. This election has been about nothing but goodies & handouts. A candidate like Harry Browne whose platform rests on freedom, liberty, and self-determination doesn't even make it onto the radar screen in this country anymore.
Overall, the best example of the results of "democracy" (read: mob rule) this time around can be found in the state of Missouri, where the majority of people have voted to send a corpse to represent them in the United States Senate. What a country.
Even so, I too think it is time for the electoral college to go. People will get the government they deserve. New Yorkers are about to get what they deserve, and we can only hope that the rest of us deserve better

SilverBullet, I agree with your sentiments.

IMO, the people of MO should be forced to dig up the Governor and send him to Washington. He would probably still be more effective than 90% of the Senate, even in corpus

WOW SILVERBULLET!!!! Very well said. The electoral college was designed to protect the less populated states from being ignored. I am not interested in a president determined by New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. If Gore is so popular in California let him go out there and run for governor.

It is obvious that 1/2 of this country wants to be taken care of by the federal government and the other 1/2 does not, but in a democracy the two sides should be able to work together and compromise, which is what happens in our country, rather than each side trying to kill off the other. Democracy may not be perfect, but it's still better than any other form of government tried so far.

SilverBullet, very well written. I had seen the Tyler comments before out on www.thefiringline.com.

And that business about the majority of the voters voting themselves access to the public treasury applies to all classes, not just the poor.

It is amazing that Bush wants to have a modest tax cut and lower the rates a tad, and the Demon-crats go ballistic. You would think that it is their money. This is considering we are paying taxes now at the rate we paid during WWII when we had 16 million people in the armed services and where fighting a two front war on two sides of the globe.

Can you all imagine what it would be like in America if our economy goes in the tank and we had a depression like in the 1930's when anywhere from 25% to over 30% of the working population was unemployed at any one time?. And, much of the rest of the working population was under-employed.

Many of the "bennies" would have to disappear because the Governments could no longer afford them because the lack of tax revenues. Then look out! I bet people will be killing people for their lunch money. Or, maybe just for their lunch.

Redlite, we may have to make your public speaking tour a duet, and give SilverBullet equal billing. SB, well spoken. I continually chuckle at the depth exhibitted on this board from a bunch of "hot rod truck" addicts.

Thanks, Moonshine. Just throwing some ideas out there for folks to kick around. Breaks some of the monotony of just discussing Lightning stuff.

And, if people think I am a jackass, I don't care. I already knew that.

And if you didn't think your vote counts, you learned a good civics lesson. They'll be teachning the kids about this one for a long time.

It is also very interesting that Gore will probably get a majority of the popular vote, but lose the election in the Electoral College.
