Question tire pressures at the strip?

Going to take to L. to the strip for the first time tomorrow. Had a ton of questions, but found most of the answers at http://www.f-body.org/dragbasics.htm The section "At the Strip" in our FAQ is woefully incomplete, it only deals with launching on slicks, which most of us are not going to do, anyway. Perhaps the FAQ should incorporate this link. Anyway, I would like to know what kind of tire pressures you folks on F1s are using (especially those with good 60' times)?

30-32 lbs rear, 35 up front.

IMO the F1s don't hook any better at very low pressures (<30) than they do with more pressure.

Drive around the water box.

Do a quick dry hop to clean the crap of the tires, but don't waste your rubber on a smoky burnout.

Launch hard from idle to start with. If you get wheelspin, roll on to the throttle a bit more gently, to get the truck rolling before punching it.

If you have a track that hooks good, and you get no wheelspin you can try launching from 1000 RPM.

Launch driving w/ 2 feet. Left on the brake, right on the gas. Moving your right foot from brake to gas will cost you > .200 in reaction time

You should be looking for 60' times < 2 seconds. Have someone else watch your launch for wheelspin. You will not be able to feel or hear small amounts of spin, especially at first.

BadDog

Good info. This thread should be placed in the FAQ's.

This is good advice... depending on the track surface and the amount of VHT... you may hook-up much better than on the street. I find that starting aggressive and then backing down if needed works best for me.
And 'launch hard' means launch harder than you do on the street, not instant 100% throttle!

And I run 28 psi rear - lower gives me wheel hop.

Cool

BadDog,

I agree with you. 30 back and 35 front. A very small burnout and a quick dry hop to see how it's hooking. Last night I couldn't go much over a 1000. Usually I can go 1200 - 1400. One night I got as high as 1600. You've just got to play it by ear. I've tried lower rear tire pressure with no luck.
You want to have plenty on air in the front tires because that's rolling resistance if they are low. My best 60' has been 1.93

Hey LTN BOLT, I was launching about 1000 last night also. My best 60 ft was 1.99 but my best ever so far is 1.93 also. That 13.55 at 100 was all I could muster. I wanted to talk to you some more but my buddy in the 93L broke his rearend and we had to leave early. He drove 130 miles with trashed spider gears!

BadDog, that's good advise the only thing I do different is heat the tires a little more, (about 5 secs.) and power brake to 1,000-1,200 rpm. side step the brake & stomp the gas if the track hooks, otherwise roll on the gas. I leave at about 2 1/2 ambers. (right before the third light comes on). Lloyd

Automan,

It was nice meeting you last night. I've got a shot of your 13.55 time and a couple of shots of you staging. I down loaded them last night but only got to take a quick look at them. Send me your email address and I will send them to you. I'm going to put them on my website too. Even with the less than perfect traction I turned a best 13.39 @ 101.2 mph.
