Lightning SVT vs. Cobra SVT
Plenty of them around here, never had a problem with them. I've even raced a few with the "fix" from last's year's recall, No problem at all.....

No problem here either, the old cobras (97/98) give a better run than the new! Had one guy with a 98 cobra "supercharged" the race was close but he eventually pulled on me. Would like to find him again now that I have some upgraded components. He He!

A stock '96-98 Cobra hardtop with a good driver at the track I race at will run 13.8-13.9 @ 102.xxmph. At the same track a stock '99-00 L will run 13.8-14.0 @ 99-100mph.
The '99s were slower initially, but once they were "fixed" I've seen them run 13.4-13.5s @ 104mph or so.
Either will have a VERY hard time staying with an L in an 1/8mile race which is as long as most street encounters are. My '96 Cobra stock had a best 60' of like 2.20 whereas my L hit 2.01 stock. That's a huge advantage right out of the hole.
Anyone racing a supercharged 4v Cobra and staying anywhere close to it (assuming the L runs low-13s/high-12s), got to race someone who has a poor tune on their car. Period.

Actualy, I've never run against a Cobra with the Lightning, or against a Lightning with the Cobra
I did run against a modded 00GT and lost at the track (slicks and exhaust on the GT). I think I ran a 13.60 that time, to his 13.0. Haven't lost to a GT on the street though. The IRS Cobras don't seem to run good from a dead stop, but are strong from a roll. On the street between my Cobra and Lightning I think it would be close but favor the L due to the better launch it can get on the street, unless it's from a roll then it's all Cobra.

Raced a pre current generation Cobra 3 times, and got him all three times, from three different starting speeds. That was prior to my Superchip R9 (had the old Superchip program). It would be uglier for him now!

I ran one at Cayuga 2 weeks ago. It was a stock 97. I ran 13.7xx to his 14.1xx. A real nice guy and we had a lot of fun. He was running consistant 14.0xx - 14.2xx all night, where I was running 13.6xx - 13.8xx.

And if you still dont beleive us, I have a video of us racing. A 99 Cobra, I raced him again a few weeks later, and told him to go have it fixed. He said he did, so I told him to take it back because they must have missed something.

And 12.85 out of a Cobra R is sad, too, IMHO. Several have been tested at 375+hp to the rear wheels. That thing should be running mid-12s @ 113-114mph easy...blowing the tires halfway down the track.
All I can offer is basically, "be wary of Mustangs". They are easily modified, and I'm not talking about chips and filters and mufflers. Those mods on a Mustang don't do nearly as well as what they do on a Gen 2 Lightning. However, from my perspective there are LOTS of Mustangs that run 12s on radials, and many that runs 10s and 11s.
Stock for stock or $500 in mods to $500 in mods...forget it. The L will win. Just watch out for the Mustang owner who has it together and has/had some deep pockets when putting his car together.

I agree with Wes 100%. There are posers and there are guys that have their act together.
I have personally never pulled away from a Cobra at the rate your video indicates. I suspect the guy gave up when he saw he couldn't handle your truck.

The '86-95 Mustangs had EFI 5.0 (or 302") engines in them. The '96+ Mustangs have 4.6 (281") engines in them.
However, the fact is that stock for stock a 4v 4.6 (DOHC) is more powerful than a stock 5.0. This is the engine in the 96+ Cobra. The 2v 4.6 (SOHC) from '96-98 (GT version) was rated a bit higher than the older 5.0, but the _facts_ are that they were no faster, and many were slower stock for stock. The '99-00 2v 4.6 is more powerful than the 96-98 variant and will run 14.0-14.2x bone stock. Still not as fast as most stock L's at the same track.
Here's what I've witnessed as far as dyno figures go. I'm not trying to throw out useless information...but, I've been around late model Mustangs since I bought my LX new in '90.
A bone stock 5.0 ('87-95...the '86 model was down on power) will typically produce ~205rwhp. A bone stock 5.0 Cobra (93-95 were the model years for these) will be ~225rwhp.
A bone stock 2v 4.6 GT (96-98) will be ~205rwhp, and a bone stock 4v 4.6 96-98 Cobra will be ~260-265rwhp.
However, the fact also remains that the old 5.0 engines are much easier to modify and less costly to do so. They utilize computers that are easier to work with, too, so you can make changes and not solely rely on custom programming to make the car perform correctly.
Hope this answers some of your questions.
Oh, one more thing...the older Fox body 5.0s (79-93) weigh ~200lbs less than a newer style Mustang. So, out of the box, many times they are quicker if the cars in question make the same power.

Hey I'm a poser. I pretend to be stock. For the last three years this was the quickest 4.6L two valve in the country. Now I will try to make it the fastest too.
