Spark Plug getting ready for lift off or injector?

Well, I got in my truck and headed to work today and heard a ticking noise around half throttle. It speeds up and slows down with the engine but doesn't get louder. I got to work and opened the hood to listen and its on the driver side around the egr tube. (I hope its the egr tube) But, the more and more I listen it kinda sounds like a loud injector and not an exhaust leak type noise. Any opinions? I thought about spraying a little ether in the direction of the noise cause if the plug is loose and air is getting by then air can get back in and the motor should respond to the ether in the air. Maybe I'm just over thinking it.

Given our trucks history with these types of noises I would say you should check all of them to see if they are loose!!!
If all seems ok with them then maybe disconnect the suspect injector and see if the sound goes away or switch it around with another one to see if the sound moves.

God I hate blown plug post's, good luck.

1st why chance it, don't drive it until you can check the plugs
second the nut that connects the egr tube came loose on mine once and was making a noise like that and increased with throttle. just grap the nut and see if it is loose first.

Sure sounds like it could be a plug. It should be easy for you to eliminate that as the source if you can check them all (not too hard).

Yeah I have parked it for now waiting for a day above freezing. I'll be driving the ranger for a couple weeks now. I don't want to be a victim of the blown sparkplug. Thanks for the info guys.

I've had my L for 6 years now and every year, when it gets cold, I hear the same noise. Every year I check the plugs, exhaust, etc. and find nothing. This only happens in the cold weather (it's below freezing here in PA). I drive for a while and get temps up and it gets quieter, but I can hear it. I've learned to ignore it. It almost sounds like the tach is a mechanical tach (i do not know if it is; i doubt it) and the tach drive needs lube, like speedos used to do years ago.

Not sure if you'll find anything, but let me know. Been looking for this noise for 6 years, as I said, and I've done many a 1/4 mile, and WOT runs in between.

Well, I work nightshift so I plan on tearing into it bright and early in the morning. Any help as to what tools and tips on how to do this somewhat quickly? I am a Caterpillar mechanic so it shouldnt be a major task but just trying to get out of the cold as soon as possible.
