L Braking Distance
Lightning 60-0 braking distance is 131ft, as reported by Motortrend. This is less than Ford's spec, so MT probably tested it.
Some of the vehicles which match or beat the L braking distance:
Nissan Frontier Crew Cab
Missan Xtera
Toyota Tundra
Isuzi Amigo
Dodge Dakota 5.9 R/T
Dodge Caravan
Jeep Cherokee & Grand Cherokee
Mazda MPV
Ford Explorer 2wd & 2wd
Range Rover
Buick LaSabre
Saturn SC2
Ford Mustang GT
Pontiac Grand AM
Pontiac Bonneville SSEi
Volkswagen Beetle
What's up with that??

So were their 1/4 mile times if I'm not mistaken....
I was wondering where my grandmother disappeared to. Maybe she was testing Lightnings for Ford?

A rear suspension designed for 800lbs payload does not brake effectively when unloaded.
On the other hand, with the WIDEST front tires of any vehicle on the road, you would think we should be able to stop pretty much on the front brakes alone...
The 2001 M3 does 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds and stop 62-0 in 115 ft. While riding on 225/45-18 F and 255/40-18 R.

Considering the weight of the vehicle and the forward weight bias, I don't think that is such a dismal figure. What concerms me is that the brakes fade quickly under repeated hard application, so I am seriously considering the Stillen brakes. $3000- ouch!

Not only that, but when I bought it I had every intention of leaving my truck bone stock. Then I started reading this board and got totally corrupted, not to mention taking major hits on my bank account.

Whoa! $3000?
Let's review.
If you replaced the brake pads as many as many as three times a year it would take you a long time to reach the 3000 dollar mark. With the standard brakes you can turn the rotors when needed. With the cross drilled rotors you can not do this, so new rotors, and about another 3 thousand.
I say save yourself the big bucks and stay with original brakes.
Just my two cents.

Well, geez, what's a poor soul to do? Its not the pad wear I object to, its the brake fade. I would like to try running some autocross, but I don't think the stock brakes are up to it. Those of you who are doing Solo II, what are you doing in the way of brake mods? Would braided steel brake lines and carbon/metal pads do anything to alleviate the fade?
Alpha:
Stainless steel brake lines will help brake feel, but not fade.
More aggressive pads can help fade, but I cannot find a 'hot' enough pad for the L... I have found stock and PF pads only. Ultimately, we may have to run such a hot pad, it would not be suited for street use.
So the real solution, as you know, is a big brake kit (bigger rotors, calipers, and lots of choices of pads, etc).
But with that said, I think you could get by doing solo II with stock brakes... the speeds are not high enough and most courses are short enough to not completely fade the brakes... (I have only done one autocross in my L - and fade was not a problem - the rear end coming around was a bigger problem!).
If you want to do any track (road race) sessions for more than a few laps, that's where the bigger brakes would really help.
I also think there will be a noticable difference in braking ability for just street use... pedal feel, initial bite, brake linearity, and braking distances should be much improved on the street.
My $0.02...

Add more air... and use more throttle!
