torque modulation.
torque modulation.
What exactly is torque modulation? I know it has something to do with the shifting in the transmission. Anyway I have a predator tuner and was wondering if I should move it up a little bit on the shifts, thanks.
If you are talking about the factory torque limiting function, it does more than just control how and when the tranny shifts,; it also control the timing and fuel delivery to keep drive train damage and wheel spin to a minimum. As far I remember this can be turned off through a custom tune. From the factory I believe that it limits tq upto about 2000 rpm then it allows full power production.
HI!... Not sure on the LIGHTNING 4R-100 but on the 4R70-W you lose 100FT/LBS of TQ during the 1ST to 2ND gear upshift. I had MIKE TROYER turn it off on my custom tune. Made a huge difference. That and his tune knocked off 7 tenths off my 1/4 mile time.
Yes, it can be adjusted through a hand held tuner, BUT it can be turned OFF through a 'custom'. its worth while to have it turned off completely for performance and to lessen the wear on the trans, (it allows the clutches to slip).

HI!... I'd buy a FTVB or a shift kit and turn it off. The only reason FORD put it in was to give it the "WOMAN" shift. Remember FORD has to try to make everyone happy. Not everyone wants hard crisp shifts and chirping the tires during the 1ST to 2ND gear upshift.

Stock Tranny 38,000 miles 450/550 rwhp no problmes here with tq modulation turned off.

If your torque reduction is disabled, now you know why I say don't disable the torque reduction, among other reasons it'll blow up the sprag sometimes.

The intermediate clutch is weak, or the weakest part anyhow, Ford put the program in to protect the tranny from the STOCK engine, doing anything to remove it and not even change the engine is pushing your luck, period. But the big problem, is the thing that most people do to remove it is really a side effect of doing something to the engine to make you need it even more. If you chip the truck and remove the torque reduction, there comes a point that every 1/2 WOT shift you get is luck. GO ahead and do it, if you want. It won't kill the tranny in a week (well, not every one anyhow) but it's not good for it, every time you WOT without it takes something away from the intermediate clutch, it's almost always a case of how long it will last. As with all things made in millions, some will last a long time, some will die pretty quick, but nothing else you can do will effect how long, it's all a matter of luck from the day you remove it.
I've said many times, bring me 10 trannies with it left in, 10 with it removed, all with about 12K miles since modded and I'll tell you which ones were which from looking at the intermediate clutch. It's not even close, and 8 of the ones with chips will say beforehand that it was shifting fine. It breaks donw gradually, you don't feel it until it finally lets go. If you watch your trap speeds, you can tell (they get slower), but otherwise, burned plates will hold somewhat up to the day they don't, when the last little bit of friction material falls of the middle plate, you no longer have second gear, and then you know how long yours was going to last.
If you're planning in doing some internal work eventually, by all means, go for it, just know that eventually, you will have to pull the tranny.

At some point all transmissions will faiil behind a high perfomance engine. Slipping clutches will fail faster than ones that are deployed quickly ( as such with torque modlualtion off).
A PROPERLY maintained tranny will not have any issues with the torque modulation turned off.
You bought the truck for its performance
, not so it shifts like your grandmas cadillac
. Anything you can do to get around the factory 'safe guards' by all meas DO IT.
