synthetics?
has anyone tried synthetic oil? how much faster of an e.t. and mph did you run? had someone tell me .3 to .6 faster and 5 to 7 mph faster. dont really believe it but who knows. i have tried it and had no improvement.

I also don't believe that changing oil will produce a faster, measurable time with E.T.'s. I do it for better lubrication hoping to protect the engine better.

I talk to the mechanic here at work, he maintains the company cars and trucks. Some of the managers have used Mobil 1 in their Crown Vic's, he informed me that he has seen failures in the ones that's did use it, it was due to sludge buildup. Any comments on this anyone.

I will comment on SVT54SC remarks on mobil one. If there was any sludge in those engines it was there long before mobil one was put in. I started using Mobil One in 1979 when it was $6.00 a quart and they advertised 25000 miles between oil changes. I went as far as 20000 miles with no oil change on my 79 riviera and never had any sludge or engine problems. My 1991 escort Gt had mobil one in it from the start and at 142,000 miles I changed the overhead valve cover gasket and all internal metal was shining like brand new with out a hint of dirt. All my trucks and cars 2000 lightning, 95 cobra r model, 1999 ranger 4x4 and 2000 focus get mobil one. For my money its the best oil available. thanks 95rcobra.

I have switched to Vavoline Synthetic in 5-30. I immediately noticed slightly better milege. Valvoline is cheaper than Mobil 1 and in my opinion, just as good. Wal-mart for 16.00 for 5 quart bottle. My friends use it in their brand new Corvettes. I think you will be pleased, but I would wait until 3000 miles on the motor until changed, just to make sure it is well broken in.
I agee with Noel..that guy is full of poo poo...you can put Mobil One in a pan and try to fry it..hey, they do it on TV...they would net even dare...the lawsuits would be immense..tell that guy to take a hike! jw

simple question. Has any one gained performance, or gas milege increase with synthetics? how much? plus i took the valve cover of a 110,000 mile mustang that had good mantainance, regular oil, looked like new. unless you buy of brand of oil at the quickie mart, sludge shouldnt be a problem with any quality detergent motor oil.
BrotherDave, I would say there is not much gain in power with mobil one but have seen increases of 1-1.5 miles per gallon with my everday driving vehicles. less friction and heat with mobil one will result in better fuel economy. as far as a 110,000 mile mustang on regular oil there is no comparison. with mobil one in the same engine there will be much less wear to engine parts because of less friction and mobil one's ability to suspend contaminants off of engine parts. Mobil has run engines for 200,000 miles on mobil one in tests and then tore down the motor with virtually zero engine part wear. you will never see that with conventional motor oil.

i realy have no problem with synthetic i just question some of the assumptions. as far as power and milage increases. someone else told me of redlines report of like 2.22 h.p. on a corvette. hard to believe such a small gain in power would affect anything. those who have run at the dyno now that a 2.22 differnce is really nothing. i also remember in the 70's and 80's that whan an engine had 100,000 miles it was time to get rid of it. now i know people with 2 to 3 hundred thousand miles on there trucks and the truck still runs great.
i can understand wanting the best for your truck, but do you anticipate having your truck over 200,000 miles. also do you know anybody who halfway took care of there car that has had an oil related problem? ( i'm sure someone out there has) if a vehicle is my second car that is driven less than 3000 miles a year and when it is driven i drive the hell out of it, i would at that point use synthetic. if it is a car i am going to drive 100000 miles, every day driving,then sale, i wont waste my money
