Question Cat back Exhaust or Replace Muffler Only?

Went to the muffler shop & I guess I wasn't as prepared as I thought, so I didn't get it yet. My question (or theirs). Should I just replace the muffler w/ the 2 singles & keep the stock tips & tubing? Or replace everything from cats back? I am thinking about 2 1/2", but they said it wouldn't make a diff & just recommended 2 1/4 b/c they thought that is what is on the truck now.
I just want it loud, but don't want to lose any power whatsoever. Not looking to gain any.

save yourself the $$$$ & just do the muffler if you are only looking for sound. Thats what I did. Oh, I also picked up some hp after the muffler swap & I mean noticeable hp also went with Dynomax http://www.dynomax.com/mufflers.stm

I have some borla tips on mine and love them. Whenever I see the stock exhausts and how relatively simple and dull they look, I am super glad I went with the borlas.

BayAreaLightning,

Our exhaust is 2 1/2 inches. Don't let them put 2 1/4 nor let them tell you it doesn't make any difference.

I would replace the tips too. I think ours look crappy.

Exclamation

Ours is 2 1/2" in and out but if I had to do it over I would go with 3" in/out.

I wwnt with a cat-back from Mufflex performance, it is all stainless with 2 two chamber flowmasters, it comes all welded together and is easy to install, the tips are much better looking than the stock ones that why i went with the complete cat-back! Go to http://www.mufflex-performance.com/ and check it out, its listed under whats new at mufflex. The only thing i did was have it welded on because even the factory muffler was leaking around those crappy clamps!!

Curious as to why you would go w/ 3" if you could do it over again? Do you feel the 3" sounds better or would give you more gains then the 2 1/2?
Thanks for the help everyone. I looked at Mufflex, & it does look good, but I think the price seems high. But, definetly could be wrong, since I could not get a estimate yet. Will go w/them if the estimate are same

After wasting good money on the BASSANI, I would go back to my original set-up from last year,a pair of Flowmasters that had me running 13.0's(consistently) with a chip and filter(OCT & NOV 99) long before anyone else. It worked, and worked well. But the Bassani sounds the best.....If I were to do it all over again, full length headers would be the way

Thumbs up

Gary Franconia...I thought about using the Mufflex System as well. Mufflex manufactures a 4 inch system for LS1 autos. Flowmaster have always been the best mufflers in my book. Have you dyno'ed your truck before and after? I am very curious as to a hp increase. Thx..jw

BayAreaL: I just feel there may be more torque to be had with the lower backpressure and possibly a deeper rumble to the sound with the larger chambers. I could be wrong but if I were to redo it I would try the 3".

Question

Gary...Just wondering, the way the tips are staggered it seems that the front would be throwing crap all over the rear. They look great did you order them and did you pay that price?

I have not dynoed my truck with or without the mufflers! Id have to say that they really didnt do much for performance, just sound and looks with the bigger tips! At first it didnt sound that good because i had an exhaust leak around the clamps that hold the system on, after getting really pissed off at it i decided to weld it on which worked out really well, no more leak!!!

The tips look awesome staggered as they are in the pics on the mufflex website, they really don't get to dirty! I polished them everytime I wash my L and they clean up great, they never get stained or rust because they are stainless steel! They really look good, im very happy with the system!
